At the beginning of the year, Naughty Dog, creators of Crash Bandicoot, The Uncharted Series and The Jak and Daxter Series revealed that before they were in the business of making next year’s “The Last of Us”, they were seriously planning a new Jak and Daxter. Having been waiting for a current generation Jak 4 for longer than I’ve been waiting for a Half Life 2 Episode 3 (or Half Life 3 as it better be called now), the news that there might just possibly be a new game got me very, VERY excited. Like Christmas morning when I was 14 (subsequently, the year I got Jak 3 for Christmas).
The child in me died when I realised that we will probably never see this game anytime soon (if even at all), and worse than that, the reasons for this were unbelievably stupid, and arguably what’s wrong with modern gaming, modern films, and pretty much modern everything.
Naughty Dog revealed that they were essentially planning on rebooting the series (what is it with reboots these days?) and though they really tried (apparently) to make it work, they felt like the game they were making wasn’t really a Jak game, and in trying to update the characters for a modern audience (I guess) they felt like the characters they were recreating weren’t really the Jak and Daxter we all fell in love with… These are all fair and valid reasons, but to me they feel like step ones- however to Naughty Dog, this, for some reason beyond me, meant surrender.
Did Naughty Dog not consider that the reason rebooting these beloved characters felt wrong to them and just wasn’t working was because these characters didn’t need rebooting, and no one was asking for a cooler, darker, more gritty updated version of Jak. What was wrong with the campy, cartoony Jak we all know and love? Ratchet and Clank came back for this generation of consoles, and they felt like exactly the same game we all remember for the Playstation 2- just with updated graphics. This is all I’m asking for: a Jak 4, but with updated graphics.
Why does the world think we need to reboot everything… but most of all, why do these reboots almost always go down the dark route? Next year we are getting a rebooted, “darker” Lara Croft, a rebooted, “darker” Devil May Cry and a rebooted, darker film version of “Superman”. I think there are two main reasons for this.
Number one, people these days are scared of anything even resembling camp (which, let’s face it, Jak and Daxter kind of was), but sometimes, can’t camp be good? I’m as big a fan of the Christopher Nolan Batman films as the next guy, but if I’m being completely honest, I think I prefer Tim Burton’s campy Batman Returns to any of Nolan’s Batman films (though I still like The Dark Knight VERY MUCH). Call me crazy… but the reason Nolan’s films weren’t quite as amazing as they could have been was because he was slightly too afraid to embrace the camp side of Batman. I’m not saying he should have gone all Schumacher (in fact I think “Batman Forever” and “Batman and Robin” should be wiped off the face of the earth)- but his Batman films were a little too humourless, and a little overdramatic for my taste (I still really like them though) and ultimately “The Avengers”- the more chilled out, more camp, more colourful and fun superhero film this year just beat out Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” as the best film of the year (my opinion).
The second reason “people these days” (I sound like an old man) like to create darker reboots is because people want to attract a more adult, “cooler” audience of people who mostly play FPS (and have lots and lots of money to buy games with). Maybe Naughty Dog thought the people who played Jak and Daxter ten years ago would be all grown up now, and wouldn’t want to play a game targeted at a younger audience. WRONG!!! … Well, I am grown up now (officially), but I still want to play that game, and so do the many thousands of adults who brought the Jak and Daxter Original Trilogy HD collection for the PS3 this year.
In fact, aren’t we, the adults who were once children who loved the Jak and Daxter Trilogy, and the many platform games we played as children, exactly the audience who would love to see another campy, colourful, cartoony Jak game, if only to relive our childhood memories of playing that game for 6 hours straight with our eyes glued (burning away to a crisp) at the TV screens while we were supposed to be doing our homework???
Is it just me, or does it appear like all the platform games that used to overpopulate our consoles are rapidly disappearing? (I’d also love to see another Crash Bandicoot by the way). It feels like all the games aimed at children (mostly Wii, Kinect and Move games) are basically aimed at preschool kids, with very few platform games targeted to all audiences- children, teens and adults alike. Just like the middle class seems to be slowly disappearing from today’s world, so it seems is the “middle class” of platform games.
Don’t get me wrong… I think “The Last of Us” (the game that ultimately is the reason there is no Jak 4) looks kind of good, potentially amazing even… but, running the risk of sounding controversial… haven’t we seen this idea, like, I don’t know, a million times before.
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic American city (yawn) where the city has been overrun by plant life… isn’t this kind of exactly like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (one of the last good platform games), Fallout 3… or, every other supposedly original sci-fi story out there. Do we really need any more post-apocalyptic science fiction stories? And also, I don’t know how many of you have seen the pilot for the new J.J Abrams show “Revolution”- but don’t these two things have basically the exact same look and setting. (Plus, “Revolution” kind of sucked).
Still, it’s difficult to criticize the Last of Us too much (although, doesn’t the main female character look exactly like Ellen Page but isn’t- which is really weird considering she is actually the lead in another game expected next year, “Beyond: Two Souls”). The Last of Us will undoubtedly be one of the best games of next year (it’s made by the same guys, and already looks a little like Uncharted 4- how can it not be good?), but it certainly isn’t the most original game of next year.
I mean, how many of you think the Last of Us is the most exciting game release of next year??? I bet not that many- Watchdogs looks much more original for example. And how many of you out there would have been giddy at the idea of arguably the best platforming game series ever made coming back for one more trilogy. I bet A LOT.
All I can say is I hope Naughty Dog seriously reconsiders creating a Jak 4, and that when they do it resembles the games we all fell in love with a decade ago, and not Emo Jak with a few scars on his face. Jak 2 and 3 were dark enough, thank you very much.

Nice article and I agree with everything apart fromthe best Batman movie, Everyone knows it is the original Batman the Movie!
I really think people need to get over the fact that Jak 4 isn’t coming (for a while maybe). All great things have to come to an end, and The Last of Us looks to be GOTY 2013 easily!
I’m sorry, but the end of your article is pretty ignorant. Almost every gaming site calls The Last of Us one of, if not THE most exciting game of next year. And you complain about it not being original… and then ask for a 4th Jak game. So you can’t tell me Jak 4 would be original and a brand new IP wouldn’t be. It just seems you are more concerned about a return of the platform genre (which I love and want to see as well). But you can’t say that “originality” is what is most important to you.
i know why naughty dog stop making jak games its because the two producers who made jak left naughty dog they left when they couldnt beat golden eye now dont that suck
I personally thought Uncharted sucked in comparison to Jak1-3. I also think this new crap will suck in comparison. All companies are trying to create games resembling reality. I hate it. Gaming seriously starts to SUCK!
I completely agree. As much as I enjoyed the Uncharted games, the Jak trilogy was the more enjoyable game for sure.
I have to agree with that. The moment I realised was when I played through assassin’s Creed 3.
“Everything looks beatiful, the gameplay is beatiful, the story is good, so why am I left with this empty feeling”.
Games aren’t as addictive as they used to be (which on the other hand is a good thing). I realised that AC 2, the game that made me like the AC series, was still the best one in the series by far. I played through that storyline like 20 times, and it still did not bore me. Lot’s of times the devs see to forget what is important in a game.
What are you on? Jak 4 would be awesome and I still believe it is going to be announced next year but The Last Of Us looks epic and even more exciting than Jak 4. And ‘Yo’ you are an idiot. Uncharted is a legendary game that looks beautiful and kicks ass!
The Last of Us looks boring… I used to be excited for it, but it’s just the same tired game conventions over and over again. I miss the platform genre. The Last of Us will just be like Uncharted 4… and yes, those games are beautiful, but the gameplay isn’t THAT good. Still, I’m sure The Last of Us will be technically good, though Watchdogs looks much better.
Daniel, your article and comment is just laughable, you first mention how ‘The Last of Us’ looks very good, now your spitting your dummy out and claiming it looks boring? perhaps you might care to watch the game-play again and stop comparing everything to ‘WatchDogs’; The Last of Us doesn’t have boring gameplay, would you rather Joel and Ellie sat in the middle of the hotel and played eye-spy? your obviously just pissed and one thing that I have learned from ‘Whatculture’ is that if GTAV and WatchDogs aren’t labeled everywhere then there not interested..
Have a nice day :)
Alright calm down. Don’t you have better things to do than moan at an article? I think it looks technically very good… but still, boring in the sense that I have seen it all before and I am VERY tired of the post apocalyptic genre.
Have a nice day to you to. :D
Wow…sounds as if someone got slightly edgy because they didn’t get the game they want, I’d call that “spoilt bratish”.
Also how can one minute you like the game and the next minute you hating pretty much everything about The Last Of Us..LOL your weird
I am pretty weird, fair enough. I wouldn’t really say i am edgy though… I barely care to be honest with you. I just think a current generation Jak 4 would be amazing, and the Last Of Us… though will be technically good, will kind of be like everything else. I just want another good platform game to be honest with you.
Really great article! The Jak and Ratchet series are two of my favorite franchises of all time, and I didn’t even play the Jak games until after I got a PS3. These are timeless games with tight gameplay and epic storytelling. The Uncharted series is also really good, but I would be far less enthusiastic about a new UC than a new J&D. I hope the UC dev unit is taking a break from that series and working on a new, proper Jak and Daxter sequel, with characters who resemble their original forms. With Sly 4 about to arrive some people think it’s probably only a matter of time before Jak 4 arrives. Here’s hoping they’re right.
Daniel, I share your love for this game series. I’ve had Jak ll for almost ten years, and I haven’t stopped playing it since I bought it as an 11-year-old, despite having finshed the game at least five times. But I’d only like a new Jak if the original creators and writers are actively involved. I disagree with your use of campy to describe the game, but is certainly is cartoonish in a sort of teenage/childish way. To make it darker, as you say Naughty Dog intended to in their rebooting, would create a whole other game that would probably be disconnected from this trilogy. A new installment should be kept in step with the tone of Jak ll & lll, as you suggest. Anyway, there’s more I’d like to say, but kudos on the article and your affinity for the Jak series.
I totally agree with this article, I have no interest in the last of us at all, I’m done with post apocalyptic games, and to be honest I never had interest in uncharted , I never bought one or played one, but I see no reason to. All I see is another 3rd person shooter. I really don’t get why it is so good. Jak 4 needs to happen.
You couldn’t have said it better Daniel! There honestly, should be another Jak trilogy. Whether it be a continued game or a completely new storyline, nonetheless, most every Naughty Dog fan would have loved to see a Jak 4. I know I would’ve. While The Last Of Us looks pretty cool, it’s too much like every other post-apocalyptic game. Not to mention the loads of money Naughty Dog would make off of Jak 4. I think another Jak series will eventually make its way into the world. We just have to wait. It might be the best Jak yet, it might be the worst. But at least it’s another Jak!
As far as I’m concerned. By them scrapping their current Jak 4 idea, they are basically telling us that they are waiting until after TLOU comes out so they can focus their attention on Jak 4. Naughty Dog does not make bad games. They never have, so by them stopping work on Jak 4 to focus on TLOU only means that Jak 4 will be even more epic because it wasnt living up to their expectations. And now we may even see it drop for the next gen Playstation, and although it will most likely be expensive. Playing it on the Playstation Orbis would be crazy epic.
hopefully with the demise of THQ (R.I.P), Jason Rubin will return to his rightful home at Naughty Dog and get crackin on Jak and Daxter: The Next Trilogy.
I Agree with you completely, i am not happy with the way the gaming industry is going. Many game we see now are copy and pastes of popular titles and or focused around multiplayer. While many of these modern day games are fun there is not much of a selection any more. Just recently Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was released which is my other favorite game series sitting next to Jak and i was so happy and pleased with the games turn out and unlke most modern day games, it was a cartoony game. I am hoping this triggers a reaction with other developers that platformers are still loved and games dont have to be realistic to be fun. I love Jak and Daxter and i am REALLY hoping to hear Jak 4 be announced as a launch title for the PS4 tomorow during the announcement of the PS4 and hopefully Naughtydog has been secretly hard at work on the reviving of the game series that so many thousands and thousands of people have held close and dearly to their hearts.
Thanks for reading and giving your opinion which obviously I agree with. I too hope that Jak 4 is released as a launch title for the PS4… if it is I will definitely be buying the PS4 on release… but because I have heard very little to suggest it is I am not all that confident that it will be. The fact that Jak and Daxter where included in Playstation All Stars Battle Royale suggests however that the gaming industry still loves these characters and that a Jak 4 should be on its way in the not too distant future. Thanks again.
I agree with this article. We need another Jak. I remember being only about 10 or 11 when I got Jak 3 I was so happy. At the time the Jak and Daxter series was my favorite and till this day I play it from time to time and it’s still one of my favorite series. The fans are still out there and Naughty Dog needs to act quickly otherwise there won’t be any more fans to buy the game. If done right we could have a GOTY game. It doesn’t need to have amazing graphics nor should we get PS2 graphics. Graphics like Borderlands would do fine. It would hold the cartoony feel of the game while still delivering tighter graphics. It would also be better to release on all platforms. PC, 360/netbox and PS3/PS4. Many of the fans have grown up and have gotten different platforms. I’ve moved from PS2 to 360 and PC, but I won’t buy a new PS3 just for one game, that’s why I would like a PC or 360 version.
