Beauty has never been an easy thing to accomplish - just ask the ladies of yesteryear. Women have literally gone to hell and back just to become the fairest of them all, and most of the time it only ended in horrific deaths. From their organs shutting down to being permanently deformed, it was complete misery for anyone who wanted to compete for the affections of the men in their town or village.

It's also not as if beauty regiments have changed much in recent times, if the amount of ladies going under the knife for a few nips and tucks are anything to go by. At the end of the day, will it ever be worth all the pain and suffering? In a world where women have evolved so much, what's the point of going through hell just to look a little bit prettier? To be a little bit thinner?

Luckily the procedures aren't as outrageous or as risky as they once were, and the women of today have a little more sense than they used to have. Turns out some of the procedures today are just as absurd as they were back in the old days.

Here are 10 outrageous ways women have suffered to be the most beautiful of them all...

10. Geisha Facials

Ever since the Heian periods, Geishas have been using nightingale excrement as facials - known as Geisha Facials.

It's become popular all over the world in recent years, because it's said to balance skin tone if you suffer from acne or skin damage.

As far as beauty is concerned, it's said to whiten the skin so it looks more porcelain. Celebrities like Victoria Beckham swear by it, saying the bird poop facial improved her acne considerably.

Whether it works or not isn't the question though... how bad must it smell?
