Whether mining some of the year’s best films, the world of gaming, TV, or in fact, the very real world around us, 2012 was quite the year indeed for gut-busting laughs. Viral videos and memes may have reached their critical mass this year; it seemed like every few days a hilarious new video was cracking us up about something or another, and a number of these have remained lodged firmly in the public consciousness even as we move forward in 2013. Whether it’s a political faux pas, smart in-jokes to events from year’s past, or simply some of those hilariously spur-of-the-moment things that stupid people do, here are the 10 funniest moments from pop culture in 2012.
10. Mark Wahlberg vs Ted – Ted
Ted was one of the funniest films of last year, and proved above all else that Seth MacFarlane can craft an amusing feature film outside of the Family Guy remit (even if using the Peter Griffin voice was more than a little lazy). The film features Mark Wahlberg as a man who, as a child, wished that his teddy bear would come to life, and as an adult, he continues to live with this deep-voiced, foul-mouthed best friend, who nevertheless still resembles the play-thing that he ostensibly is. A hilarious premise in of itself is highlighted by one brilliantly funny scene, in which Wahlberg says to Ted, “Sometimes I just think I should have got a Teddy Ruxpin!”, kick-starting one of the most brilliantly ludicrous fight scenes ever filmed.
What’s great about it, as MacFarlane notes himself, is the realistic brutality of the fight; it’s shot like The Bourne Ultimatum, but has a freaking teddy bear fighting a guy instead of a trained assassin. It’s a testament to Wahlberg’s performance that he manages to make it so convincing given that, of course, he was essentially fighting himself when they shot the scene.

Umm, Dude. Stick to movie reviews, I actually dig those. If these are the top 10 things you found funny this year, you’re going to really hurt yourself when something funny actually does happen.
And…I’m glad you find the American political system amusing (so do we Americans), but feel free to keep your British biases to yourself, ‘lest I be forced to take jabs at Prince Harry’s pool hijinx, which were funnier than anything on this list. You forgot to add Clint Eastwood talking to an empty chair, BTW, which is also not very funny, but seems like something that would have been right in your wheelhouse with this article.
You’re better than this.
“White people mourning Mitt Romney” made me piss myself. I didn’t even notice and I’m brownm and prone to notice displays of white grief.
What’s the fun of New Year as a writer if you can’t look back at the year like this ;-)….
Loved the old lady with the painting, especially as since that’s happened she’s tried to sue the church for some of the extra money they made from the fame of the story….. Looks more like Jesus after being hit by a steamroller
Remember it’s all the writers opinion. If you feel differently WRITE YOUR OWN ARTICLE
The Jesus painting was a brilliant moment, especially all the Photoshopped versions that followed
I can’t agree with the Ted moment being on here as it was such a terrible film to begin with, and so many rehashed jokes from the TV shows, some from other TV shoes. The fight is just a live action version of Stewie vs Brian or Peter vs the chicken. It’s been done before and the credit that Ted has got as a comedy is one of the most annoying things of last year.
***TV shows, not TV shoes***
White people mourning Romney was perhaps the greatest thing on this list. Nix that… it was the greatest thing ever.
