Goonies not good enough for sequel

The writer behind Fanboys tried, and failed, to get Goonies 2 going.

The Goonies, along with Gremlins and Back to the Future, is one of those seminal '80s Spielberg/Amblin movies. I've not seen it in a few years and frankly I fear watching it again in case it doesn't live up to my memory of it. There's been plenty of effort to get a sequel up and running over the years and the latest guy to try is Fanboys writer Adam F. Goldberg. Goldberg gave an interview to Cinematical where he talks about his pitch to director Richard Donner and brings up the possibility of a Goonies musical:-

"I went in to pitch Goonies 2. Had it all worked out, Donner was there. I was there. What could go wrong? Essentially, halfway through the pitch he stops me and tells me they've had many, many writers go down this path. And nothing. Orci and Kurtzman, Dougherty and Harris, the best of the best. And they couldn't do it. And you know what? I agree. So as a hail mary, I start riffing on the Goonies musical which I had heard may, somehow, someday happen. I came back three weeks later with a full pitch and went to town. It was so amazing to build upon characters that I've known my entire life. Pitch new scenes. New relationships. Create what the parents are doing while the kids are having their adventure. Best pitch I've ever had in my life. And at the end of the pitch, Donner looked at me and said, "Thank you. So much. This really meant a lot". Hopefully, if it ever happens Donner will come knocking. Until then, it was just great to have that experience."
I think the only person who wants a Goonies sequel is Corey Feldman. Richard Donner is a very rich man but he no longer has the clout to walk into the studio and get it greenlit. The only hope it has is if A) Spielberg suddenly gets the urge to make it (probably throwing in Shia LaBeouf in the process), B) a young hotshot exec who grew up with the film moves up the ranks of Warner Bros and gets a little nostalgic, or C) it goes straight to DVD like Lost Boys 2. source - cinematical

Will Reynolds hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
