Javier Bardem Offered Roland Deschain In THE DARK TOWER!

Perhaps the biggest role in Hollywood right now being cast, figuratively and literally, is that of Roland Deschain, the anti-hero protagonist of The Dark Tower book series that is to be adapted to film and television. Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman, director and writer respectively, are apparently really getting this thing going as, according to Deadline, they have offered the leading man role to the recently Oscar nominated Javier Bardem (Biutiful, No Country For Old Men). As I alluded to earlier this role requires an unreasonable commitment from any actor as the Stephen King magnum opus will be adapted by Universal for three films and two television mini-series. The adaptation of this series has been seemingly €˜in development€™ for a significant amount of years but the signs point towards casting in just a few days. Just earlier today Christian Bale was added to the already known wish list consisting of Bardem and Viggo Mortensen. However it seems that more than Bale, Bardem is the guy Howard and Universal really want. I would imagine that the only stumbling block to Bardem actually taking the role would be the commitment, since unlike Bale and Mortensen, Bardem hasn€™t ever been part of a huge franchise so this could be his chance to do so if he was so inclined. The fact that he will make a nice paycheck also doesn€™t hurt. (Aside: Bardem and his partner Penelope Cruz just had a baby so just another piece to consider as to maybe why he wouldn€™t want to commit the time required here) But as the studio€™s first offer I think this is the best choice. I feel like Bardem was born to play a gunslinger and would fit nicely into the Eastwood/Leone-esque aesthetic that The Dark Tower offers. As for the project as a whole I€™m not so sure but Howard/Goldman/Universal seem to be committed and enthusiastic, as well as huge fans, to making this project come alive as best it can. Also earlier with the news that Bale had been added to the wish list The New York Post also reported that Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter, Quarantine) and Ghita Tazi are on the shortlist to play Susannah. Naomi Harris€™ name had also been dropped for that role late last year. So if Javier Bardem signs up do we like or dislike? And who would be better if you don€™t like Bardem for when Roland begins his Dark Tower journey in 2013.
