One of the greatest films I have seen in the first decade of the 21st Century was Tarsem's
'The Fall'; it's a movie deserving of a growing cult appreciation, visually astonishing, heartbreaking, funny and exciting, it is both a love letter to the power of storytelling (a la
'The Princess Bride') as well as a dark-edged rollicking adventure. So, naturally, I have been eagerly awaiting Tarsem's next move.
/Film has a series of images online of the cast of his new feature -
'Immortals' - in action, including Henry Cavill as Theseus, questing alongside Freida Pinto (
'Slumdog Millionaire') as Phaedra, an oracle priestess. Meanwhile Mickey Rourke plays King Hyperion, Kellan Lutz is Poseidon, John Hurt is Zeus, Isabel Lucas his daughter Athena and Stephen Dorff as Stavros, a theif who joins Theseus on his quest. The synopsis runs thusly; 'A purported bastard who retains an allegiance to his mother despite the fact that he longs to join the quest of a king who is battling demons in ancient Greece later embarks on a grail of discovery that has him finding he is the kings son and also fated to become his countrys greatest hero as he leads the successful war against long-imprisoned Titans who are hoping to use the demons to restore their power.'
If all that sounds rather close to
'Clash of the Titans' then don't be surprised to discover that Warner Bros. were trying to buy the script by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides for their recent 3-D snooze-fest. Fortunately, it ended up in the clutches of Tarsem Singh who has described the film as "'
Oldboy' meets Caravaggio". Alongside these still frames there are a number of behind-the-scenes videos at the
Rogue Pictures site where Tarsem discusses how the minotaur is a 'beastly baby' and the Gods 'are like flying squirrels'. So, any other fans of Tarsem's
'The Fall' (or even his debut
'The Cell'?) out there looking forward to his Greek action epic?
