Millar admits Superman snub, turns to AMERICAN JESUS instead

Wanna know why the Superman reboot talk has been so quiet lately? Well it would seem Warner Bros. are now balking at the idea, at least for the time being. They don't want to rush into it and make another mistake, which this time would seriously put Superman on life support, possibly for decades. superman-flying Last year, WB were inviting pictures from anyone with a good idea and according to comic book writer Mark Millar (who was the most vocal about his intentions in wanting to make an 8 hour picture retelling of Supes whole life), the studio did indeed meet with several writers and directors, but thought better to put the development on the back burner at this time. Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and future Batman movies might be their priority right now. Anyway here's Millar talking about the situation as found by /film...

€œWarner€™s talked to us and a few other writer/ director teams, but things seem to be in stasis right now. As far as I understand, nothing is happening with Superman at the moment and so the director and I are just working on another project. If it happens, great. If it doesn€™t, no biggie. Kick-Ass taught me that creating your own stuff can be at least as much fun and you don€™t have to answer to anyone. It€™s the future, baby.€
Not long after Millar made that statement came the news from The Hollywood Reporter that Millar was moving on to make another movie from his own material once again. The trades say he is in talks with his Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn to bring his comic series American Jesus to the big screen. The film would once again be outside of studio interference and backing, as they are looking to finance it themselves. If I remember rightly, to get Kick-Ass financed they had to do a lot of borrowing and call in a lot of favours, including help from BBC's Jonathan Ross, whose wife Jane Goldman co-wrote this screenplay. I might be wrong on that, but that's how my mind remembers it. /film have the more detailed plot...
The story follows a twelve-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he€™s returned as Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! How will he deal with the destiny to lead the world in a conflict thousands of years in the making? Basically, American Jesus is Millar€™s re-telling of The Book of Revelation from the Bible, set in contemporary times.
Now that sounds incredible. Talks are quite advanced and a summer start with Vaughn could be in the offing, if they can once again pull in favours and probably prove to investors that Kick-Ass can make money, and so can this project. Really sucks about Superman but I'm willing to wait for Warner Bros. to go ahead with the right project at the right time, and not rush something out that's not the best Superman story it could be. And well, projects like this from Millar are so exciting, I'm not going to miss the Man of Steel that much. Though I will say Millar's pitch is the most exciting Superman project I've ever heard involving the long running DC Comics character, so let's hope when WB are ready, they come knocking on Millar's door.
