Ok so Singer's got a Jack and the Beanstalk movie... now Catherine Hardwicke's re-telling LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD!
I'm hoping that Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) can bring the real disturbing depths of the Brothers Grimm version of Little Red Riding Hood to the big screen, I don't wanna see a teenage love triangle, or a romantic werewolf movie that Warner Bros I would presume are expecting. I wanna see the film Guillermo del Toro would make. I wanna see a sick, Rated R, stomach churning disgusting version that will offend everyone. One that will cause controversy in all quarters. A version that will be notorious for it's blood and guts, and for it's no holds barred ripping a part of someone like Dakota Fanning. Or Ellen Page, if you really have to go a little older. A version that makes you forever terrified of the woods, or what could be lurking behind shadows. After all, Little Red Riding Hood in it's classic form is the tale of a man beast rapist who takes the virginity of a maturing young girl who has just started menstruating. Isn't that what your English teacher taught you? Variety says Hardwicke will direct The Girl With the Red Riding Hood at WB from a script by David Leslie Johnson, whose horror film Orphan is said to be spectacular. Can't wait to check it out and I wish I had time to visit my multiplex to see it, but I really enjoyed his interview over at Creative Screenwriting Magazine, which is a fascinating listen. Johnson, who worked for years as Frank Darabont's writing assistant sounds like a guy who has his head screwed on and has some good stories to tell and isn't afraid to go places that other writers wouldn't. I mean have you heard what the ending for Orphan was? Jeez! Hopefully Warner Bros. will go R-Rated with this "gothic" adaptation. Please tell me that's the plan!
