Phillip Noyce Says He Won't Direct SALT 2
I imagine the now probable Salt franchise is to Angelina Jolie what the Mission Impossible series is to Tom Cruise. Just like when Cruise gets a little bored with the movie offers that come his way and maybe his more risque choices don't get the interest he might have hoped, he can make a few phone calls and convince Paramount to pull the trigger on another Ethan Hunt adventure to get him back into the blockbuster spotlight. And because of Salt's near $300 million worldwide total (including breaking even domestically), Sony are likely to allow Jolie the same power. Because of this, we don't have any idea as to when we might see a sequel to Salt. Angelina Jolie might decide she wants to make one next summer, or not for three to four years. Whenever the time does come though, director Phillip Noyce claims he won't be the one behind the camera...
Those 3 Blu-ray cuts represent just about everything I have to offer on Everlyn Salt€ If there ever is a sequel, better its directed by someone with a completely fresh take on what I believe could be a totally entertaining and complex series of stories.Noyce has probably pulled out of the running because he could see how this franchise was going to be an oddly timed thing and he wasn't willing to be on beck and call for the actress. Or maybe the frantic direction of Salt, which did feel like four spy thrillers mashed together into one crazy cocktail really is all he had to say about the Russian spy. Right now Noyce seems to has his eye on two projects, having attached himself to a Bill Kelly written sci-fi romance spec script Timeless this year that focused on a widowed man who uses the fortune his dead wife left behind to build a time machine to see her one more time and settle an unresolved argument. Though it's expected that his next movie will be Dirt Music, an adaptation of Tim Winter's Booker Prize winning novel, described as a 'love story and a musical'. Russell Crowe would lead as grieving country musician-turned-poacher in the wilderness of Western Australia who begins a relationship with a neighbor. Crowe would sing in the production and last we heard Noyce was desperately trying to gain funding to shoot next year.
