Tom Cruise WAS so close to being a Watchmen?

tom_cruise523.jpgZack Snyder's got a big movie coming next week in the U.S. You might have heard of it.... it's something about a couple of hundred of Spartans defending against a massive Persian army. As big as 300 is, the movie he has following ON PAPER, is ten times bigger. Alan Moore's graphic novel Watchmen, is the Citizen Kane of graphic novels. It's the pinnacle of how far the medium can be pushed and is truly one of the greatest stories written over the last 20 years. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of it although I respect how good a story it is and everything. I can tell it's good but it's not my thing. Anyway, I'm babbling. A movie adaptation of Watchmen has been in development hell for years with big names such as Terry Gilliam, Paul Greengrass and Darren Aronosfky attached at various points, some getting as far as beginning pre-production. As things currently stand, Zack Snyder seems more confident than most at bringing the legendary graphic novel to the big screen. CHUD are reporting that none other than Tom Cruise was in talks for a big role in the flick, but he eventually turned it down. This is what the director told the site... €œHe was interested....I did talk to him about it for a while.€ The role he was up for was Ozymandias (third row, back right on the pic), who in the comic is the most famous guy in the 150px-Watchmencharacters.jpgworld and is the perfect human being. Which would be a hell of a thing to watch when you see the public image of Tom Cruise these days. It's a shame he won't be involved but it's nice to see this project moving along. Snyder says he is fighting to keep Watchmen R-rated, which is a battle he is apparantely winning. I have a feeling this Zack Snyder is going to be a huge name over the next few years and if 300 goes down as well as it should..... he's going to be a big player in Hollywood. source - aicn, chud
