What happened before Plissken Escaped from New York?

Turns out the Escape from New York remake may not be a remake at all. John Carpenter who directed the original flick told SuicideGirls in an interview that the film may actually be a prequel.... "I don€™t know that it€™s a remake. I think it€™s a lot about Snake before he gets to New York". Ah, so it's a young Snake Plissken. Does that mean it's about the crimes he committed before he got sent to prison? Carpenter is Executive Producer on the movie, but his involvement is minimal.... "I read the scripts and make sure the character is the same character that we wrote originally. I think that would be cool.
