"You see he was my son, his name was Jason. And today is his birthday" - FRIDAY THE 13th trailer!

The official FRIDAY THE 13th trailer is attached to prints of SAW V which opens worldwide today and has now kindly been made available online via Myspace.

As a big fan of 80's horror, this has unquestionably been a movie on my radar since it was first announced but no more so than any of the later Jason sequels. I can't say I'm looking forward to this one anymore than I was seeing Jason in space in JASON X but I will keep paying to see this character on the big screen because I feel like he's been part of my upbringing since I first saw the early films.

What works in the trailer... well I love the voice-over, it gives a great atmospheric setting and brings a tragic quality to the story. Music is solid, but I have a lot of problems with the rest of what we have been shown... it feels to clean, to modern, Jason too much of a superhero... it's failings are the same as every recent slasher film.

Shake cam doesn't work these days. It's too sophisticated a technique, directors are too good at it.

Marcus Nispel is the director here and Michael Bay once again the producer, the same pairing that brought us THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake five years ago... a movie I didn't hate but was too well shot and artistically bright to be nearly as effective as the original 1970's Tobe Hooper gritty and bleak masterpiece.

Same can be said here. A studio driven Jason Voorhees is not something that interests me much. It's days like these I kinda wish Eli Roth had gotten his hands on the project.

If CABIN FEVER wasn't the greatest homage to FRIDAY THE 13th ever made, I don't know what is!

Watch for the movie on Friday February 13th 2009!
