Youth Without Youth Gets a Trailer
We finally get a look at Youth Without Youth, Francis Ford's big comeback movie.
Francis Ford Coppola hasn't directed a film since The Rainmaker back in 1997. Though that film wasn't his best work, there's no doubting the man is a legend. The Godfather, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now are all great examples of American cinema - so anything Coppola does is going to get attention. The trailer for his new film, the World War II set romance Youth Without Youth, has hit the net via IGN. It's incredibly slight and offers little in the way of insight into the what YWY is actually about. Nevertheless, the digital cinematography looks excellent and it looks like Coppola has taken some inspiration from his filmmaking kids Sofia and Roman in tackling something personal and on a smaller scale than his previous work. In many cases directors have a short period in their careers, usually early on, where they're operating in their prime. Coppola's time has most likely passed, but hopefully his career won't mirror that of Rob Reiner and Brian De Palma's. Both of those directors had "it", whatever that is, but spectacularly lost it (though De Palma may have simply misplaced it, as Redacted is allegedly a return to form). Worryingly though, Coppola has been out the game for so long he may end up like George Lucas or Terrence Malick. Both spent years away from directing and their recent work has failed to recapture the magic of their early days. source - ign, filmick
