The powerful and enduring relationship between music and style has been a topic of discussion since the two forms of expression became intertwined over sixty years ago. For generations, people everywhere have been trying to imitate or selectively poach from their favourite musicians, whether it be in an attempt to feel a stronger connection with their idol, as a method of making others aware of allegiances and attitudes that they may share with recognisable characters, or simply because it looks downright cool. The history of modern music has been generously decorated with a plethora of fascinating characters, and whether their styles are shockingly avant-garde or seriously casual, there are certain icons who have captured a look that will forever be recognisable. On the pages to follow is a list of ten people that I consider to have played the role of style icon within the world of music (in no particular order).
