10 Musical Artists Who Are Keeping Funk Alive

8. Brownout

Already well-known for their reinterpretations of Black Sabbath classics on Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath (2014) and Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath II (2016), these fabled masters hardly need any introduction. Both albums captured the essence of the original rock tunes—infused with heavy guitar riffs—but enhanced them by way of percussive backgrounds and a solid horn section.

Now, they're diving back into their funkier roots. The aptly named Over The Covers (2017) features some new originals with updated takes on the grooviness that brought them to prominence. The synchronicity between the guitar & bass along with the interplay between the horns and rhythm section, all led by strong vocals, help bring this fresh offering its unique flavor.

While the themes presented in the short EP don't represent anything too deep, they're instantly relatable and well-served by the dance-inducing beats.

Lest we forget, the band has two earlier albums under their belt - Aguilas & Cobras (2009) and Oozy (2012). They've also backed up funk legends like Prince, and a good share of the current lineup are former members of Grupo Fantasma, the revered (and Grammy Award winning) Latin funk legends.
