10 Pairs Of Famous Rock Albums That Came Out On The Same Day

The happiest of shared birthday to these titanic albums.

Superunknown Downward Spiral
Nothing/A&M

Did you know that Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were both born on the same day in 1809? Or, if you fancy a more modern example, Kat Dennings from 2 Broke Girls shares a birthday with the Olsen twins.

This is all to say that sometimes, by the force of sheer coincidence, famous people end up entering this world at the same time. The same can also be said for famous rock albums.

Each entry of this list is devoted to a pair of LPs that were first made available on the exact same day. Some may have been released on different days in different territories further down the line, but their initial debuts happened completely parallel to one another.

Some pairs go together beautifully; a real symbol of where the genre was at the time. Others, well, they make about as much sense as Charles Darwin being born on the same day as Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Either way, if you were buying music on any of these days, then you were absolutely spoilt for choice. You know, back when buying music was still a thing people did.

10. Weezer - Weezer & Diary - Sunny Day Real Estate

On May 10th 1994, two bands who would go on to represent very different parts of the 90s would both put out their debut album.

One was Weezer, who released the first of many, many, many albums just called Weezer. For the sake of simplicity (and sanity), let's call this one "The Blue Album".

Rivers Cuomo and chums announced themselves on the big stage through songs like Buddy Holly, Undone - The Sweater Song, and Say It Ain't So, and this brand of fun, yet emotionally resonant rock would earn them fans the world over. The Blue Album is still one of Weezer's best ever, although that's not saying much, considering some of the dross they've churned out since.

On the other side of the coin is Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate, an album that was instrumental in establishing emo music as a force to be reckoned with.

With its focus on melody and lyrics, it set the band out from their grungey counterparts, and opened the doors for many more kids in eyeliner with large fringes to make their own mark on the genre in the decades to come.
