5 Terrible Lyrics In Otherwise Awesome Songs

4. Def Leppard - 'Pour Some Sugar On Me'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UIB9Y4OFPs In 1987 and 1988, arguably the biggest band in the world was Def Leppard. Five lads from Sheffield, in the English, northern county of Yorkshire. This lofty status came about with the release of their fourth album, the unbelievably successful, 'Hysteria'. It spawned 7 hit singles, and to date has sold in excess of 20 million copies. in the US alone. After the huge impact and large sales, made by 1983's 'Pyromania', the "Leps", were, unsurprisingly in no real rush to attempt to follow it up. They freely admit that the false starts, missteps and tragic accident where drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a car accident all contributed to the four years taken to release the album. Gaps of that size are fairly common place nowadays, but back then, it was largely unheard of. You'd think, with that much time to create, vocalist Joe Elliot, and uber-producer, Mutt Lange, could have come up with better than the nonsense, that this monster hit, features as its lyrics. "Listen, red light, yellow light, green light, go Crazy little woman in a one man show Mirror queen, mannequin, rhythm of love Sweet dream, saccharine, loosen up." Erm, what? "Razzle 'n' a dazzle 'n' a flash a little light Television lover, baby, go all night Sometime, anytime, sugar me sweet Little miss innocent sugar me, yeah." Come again? Elliot has made no bones about it. This song is just loads of words thrown together that sound good and have sexual connotations. I guess with him having going on record, admitting that it isn't meant to be anything deep and meaningful, and the fact that this, the fourth single, was responsible for a further 4 million sales of the album that it belonged to, we can forgive him huh? Also, it is a song, meant to make you feel good and be easy to dance to. A case of, "does what it says on the tin".

Live and work in Aberdeen, Scotland...unfortunately. Sang in My Minds Weapon (Basick/Drakkar/Sony) for ten years (2002 - 2012) and now just tinkering with various other projects. Die hard Leeds United fan. Metalhead in my heart but also love many other genres of music. Also enjoy anything with Christopher Walken or David Caruso. Family live in Perth, Australia, so have been there many times. Best place in the world.
