This Week in Music Review: 6/09/13-6/15/13

musi It was truly a surprise to see the number of new songs that came out this week by old familiar acts, such as Nine Inch Nails, Goo Goo Dolls, and Jimmy Eat World. Classic metal band Black Sabbath returned with their new album 13, and Jack Johnson brought his familiar sound back to the airwaves. Comedy act, The Lonely Island, also returned with a new album of their own. There were numerous new releases with some disappointments and some surprises. Rounding out the week's new releases include a new single by electronic artist Kaskade, a new single from the alternative duo The Civil Wars, a new album from metal act Black Veil Brides, a new single from alternative group Grouplove, and another Big Time Rush album that sounds the same as every other one they have done (I usually don't start reviewing until the next page, but I could not help myself).

Best Single of the Week: Atmosphere by Kaskade

Kaskade Electronic house artist Kaskade produced a beautiful song in "Atmosphere," which combines the elements that make house music great with wonderful harmony and piano accompaniment. Kaskade, best known as a supporting act on many songs, such as "All You" by The Cataracs and "Lick It," a song he produced with well-known brostep artist Skrillex. This latest single can be compared to much of fellow house artist Zedd's music. In many ways, it sounds like another "Clarity," with the clean vocals, piano verses, and catchy hook to pull it all together. It truly is the best single released this week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLIP-Wet9-c

Best of the Rest

Alternative band Grouplove made a close second. Their new single "Ways to Go," which will appear on their new album Spreading Rumours due in September, is a great blend of snappy tunes, catchy hooks, and a bunch of instruments used throughout. Although the song is not lyrical genius, it certainly would make anyone want to groove out. "Not Gonna Die" by Christian rock band Skillet is refreshing and familiar to their sound, while "The Way It Used To Be" by pop artist Mike Posner was as catchy as you can get. Techno single "Stinger" by Oliver Heldens should also not be forgotten, which makes any listener want to dance immediately. For a 1980s pop rock sound, "Down in the Shadows" by Swedish band INVSN is a recommended download.
