20 Celebrities Who Have Battled Addiction In Rehab

Life at the top is difficult.

Fame is a two headed beast: on the one hand you're presented with a bubble of adoration where every little thing you do is proclaimed genius by an army of committed fans. But on the other, you're in a goldfish bowl, where even the most normal behaviour, acceptable in normal society - being dressed in sweats, going out with make-up, drinking for the entire weekend - are made grotesque and lambasted by an obsessive media. For some celebrities, fame takes its toll, and with workloads demanding an awful lot and the pressure of having to be on whenever you're in public, the temptation to unwind rather vigorously can become a dangerously intoxicating lure. When the media gets a sniff of excess - whether genuinely to a supposedly "criminal" degree or just when someone is seen partying too often and is declared morally repugnant by tabloids who rake through people's private phone messages - the logical next step is to head off to rehab humbly. Sometimes it's easy to forget that stars are just normal people: that they are subject to the same illnesses, addictions, and self-destruction that shapes and scars everyone else - it's just that their behaviour is so under the microscope that it's easier to point fingers and say they deserve to be in rehab or behind bars. And when everyone is obsessed with your weight, inevitably the threat of eating related addictions and disorders are dangerously encouraged. If you were a celebrity could you honestly say your binge drinking culture or recreational drug use wouldn't see you treated the same way? No, didn't think so...

The sultry actress (and current girlfriend of Ryan Gosling) checked herself into rehab in 2008 for 'substance abuse'. She put on a brave face in the media and said she has no regrets, saying she had the utmost respect for people who are strong enough to go and face their demons head-on.
