3. 3. Gary Anderson

At one stage of his career, it didn't seem like Gary Anderson would fulfil his potential. He was seen as a heavy scorer who lost the important matches but that changed when he switched to the PDC, reached the World Championship final and eventually won the Premier League in 2011.

The Scot would have to wait until November 2014 for his next televised triumph, which came at the Players Championship Finals, but that success acted as a catalyst for more and he won his first world title at the start of 2015 as he defeated Taylor 7-6 in an absorbing final.

A second Premier League crown would follow before he found his form upon his return at the Alexandra Palace, dropping just two sets on his way to the final where he beat Adrian Lewis.

There are always going to be matches where Anderson under-performs and securing back-to-back world crowns may lead to his motivation dipping as his career continues but so far, he has the desire to continue to challenge Van Gerwen at the top of the game.

Will he ever become world number one? Probably not, but when they are both at their best, there is very little to separate the pair and darts will be in rude health if Anderson can maintain his current level for another five years.
