Six months it has taken for it to be confirmed, but Steve McClaren looks like he will finally be named head coach of Newcastle United within the next week. Ever since Alan Pardew departed for Crystal Palace at the turn of the year, McClaren has been favourite for the role. John Carver was placed in caretaker, and then interim, control of the Magpies, but McClaren has been the most-likely permanent successor to Pardew for almost half a year. Having turned down the opportunity to coach the Magpies not once, but twice, so far in 2015, it appears as if McClaren is set to jump at the third offering. The fact that Derby County sacked the former England manager after he failed to take them to the play-offs could have something to do with it, seeing as he said he was never "tempted" by the Newcastle job just a few short weeks ago while he was still in control of the Rams.
