Chelsea are lining up a £10 million bid to bring Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi to Stamford Bridge this summer, according to the Mirror.

Returning Blues manager Jose Mourinho is seeking to reinvigorate the engine room of his side and wants the Italian, 29, to be his new midfield general.

Mourinho’s central midfield options are limited and with John Obi Mikel’s future at the club in serious doubt, the “Special One” is in the market for a utility man.

The Chelsea boss will be hoping he can take advantage of de Rossi’s recent fall from grace at the Stadio Olimpico, where last season the midfielder had a furious bust up with manager Zdenek Zeman.

Fans of the club have also apparently turned their backs on de Rossi, who celebrates his 30th birthday this month, as i Giallorossi completely missed out on Europe last season after finishing sixth.

Mourinho tried to buy the player during his spells at Inter Milan and Real Madrid, while Premier League rivals Manchester City were desperate to sign him during Roberto Mancini’s era.

Now, after Roma president James Pallotta sensationally confirmed “everybody is on the market” following the club’s failure to qualify for either the Champions or Europa League next season, Mourinho could finally get his man.

Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is expected in London next week to discuss the possibility of loaning Chelsea’s Brazilian right-back Wallace, who the Blues signed from Fluminense in January.

The Europa League champions will use that opportunity to push a deal through for de Rossi, and while Roma have insisted Chelsea’s opening offer – thought to have been £8.5 million – was not enough, the Serie A club could settle for a cut-price deal and let their troubled star leave.
