Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken out against the current trend of vast and vulgar transfer fees, by suggesting to Sky Sports that new Chelsea signing Eden Hazard was overpriced when he joined the Stamford Bridge club for a quoted £34million fee from Lille. According to the same article, the United boss had initially been interested in taking the Belgium international to Old Trafford before he joined Chelsea, though not for that sort of money:
“There is a borderline in terms of what you would think is a good signing for United. I see some values on players, like Hazard for instance. To me it was a lot of money. He’s a good player, but £34m?”
The United boss also criticised the general state of the current market, pinpointing the influence of agents as a toxic element, while also taking the time to defend his own club’s scouting and transfer policy:
“What we’re finding anyway, the climate for buying these top players – not just the transfer fees, the salaries, agents’ fees – is just getting ridiculous now. In the Hazard deal, Chelsea paid the agent £6m. The (Samir) Nasri situation was the same. It’s all about what you think is value for a player. I am not envious of those deals at all. We placed a value on Hazard which was well below what they were talking about. So if it doesn’t work, well we’re not worried about that. We think we’ve got good value in (Shinji) Kagawa.”
So far this summer, United have brought in Shinji Kagawa from Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund and fellow midfielder Nick Powell, who joined from the highly-rated academy at Crewe. Ferguson believes Powell’s acquisition shows exactly how well his club work in the scouting market:
“We scout well. Sometimes we do the scouting for other clubs. The minute the agent knew we’d spoken to Powell, I think every club was in with offers. But we’d done the deal. Whenever we show interest in a player it activates the situation with other clubs. But we’ve done well over the years. We’ve bought well. One or two bad ones, no doubt about that, but you handle that.
The big difference is when the academy started 10 years ago we had to change our scouting in terms of abroad. So that’s increased. Looking at countries like Brazil, Mexico and through South America. France too, we’re all over Europe now.”
This might well just be Sir Alex’s first step to kicking off his usual mind-games, with Chelsea looking to make a reinvigorated assault on the Premier League after a disappointing 6th place finish last term, but he does make a good point about the state of the market. Liverpool found to their detriment last year that market valuation and over-inflation can lead to extravagant and ill-considered moved like the one that saw Andy Carroll move to Anfield for £35m.

Fergie is sad because the American owners tied his financial hands. He should stay quiet and just chew gum.
Well…Ferguson is clearly just running his mouth again. Most reports concluded that City, United and Chelsea all equalled each others bids for Hazard (both in personal terms and transfer fee) so when I read stuff like critism from fans of the Manchester clubs regarding the price we paid I just laugh a little to myself. The fee was high, yes, that was because of the competion for his signiture (a situation created by his agent no doubt), but let that not distract from the fact that everyone invloved was willing to meet the quoted price; everyone INCLUDING Alex Ferguson…who is now bidding £28-£35million for Lucas Moura – arguably an even bigger risk than Hazard. Methink he’s just upset at having lost out on his top transfer target Eden Hazard!
Well said max… He is just running his mouth because he is upset with hazard choosing chelsea. And although he has kagawa he is not happy with his skill set as he looked ordinary during the pre season. That is the reason why he is desperate after moura. He is such a j*****s if he feels that hazard is over priced at 32 million then why is he spending so much on moura. He should stop barking at others and look at himself. I geniunely hope he doesn’t get moura and if he gets him anyhow moura turns out to be the worst at man u
I dont think this about running mouths this is purely based on price-tag and opinons the fact that Alex Ferguson has said that Eden Hazard is overpriced is a respectable but debatable opinon at that its just his opinon i dont see how he has ran his mouth and thats from me a Chelsea FC fan and he was right in saying Kagawa was a godd deal and i hope to see him and hazard both in action next season XD
jealousy is a disease..get well soon fergielous
@max@sat! U guy’z have said it all and that is exacly the point..he his just upset that he missed up in is top transfer target.Harzard is far better than kagawa…
Fergu Or fergi has a mouth running diseases looking for were to spit out his mouth smelling sore.Roman Abraham is the man.Long live Roman long live Chelsea.
fergi is a joke hazard is better than kagawa giggs valencia carrick but together
fergi joke his wages and gum cost billions
Too hel with sir alex f.
You lot don’t no much about football Utd never actually bid for him and none of us no who the better player is kagawa or hazard befor they play in the prem but for the price off them both hazard has to be twice as good to say chealse got the better deal kagawas record speaks for it’s self in a much better league fact
Hopefully he will retire soon
to be fair I am a huge Chelsea fan (long live Frankie Lampard) but I have to agree with Sir Alex. In todays modern game there are too many players demanding high wages and manipulating the younger players with huge salaries which causes the agents to be worse with all the bs transfer rumors. I am sick and tired of coming on to look at who we have acquired and seeing that we have bought a player who will flop (an example of this is Shevchenko and at the start Torres) Some players need to prove their value. Van Persie is a brilliant striker and I agree with his costs however I do not believe Hazard is worth £32 million nor Hulk to be £38 million. Footballers should be playing for the game not for the pay check

I agree with SAF BUT… He’s the one contradicting himself hugely here!!
“Ooh he’s not worth this price” But Man United are putting in bids of near enough 30million for a unproven at the elite level in Europe and in the CL Lucas Moura… So he’s not really justifying that!
Football is a overpriced rich mans game thanks to the morons trying to “protect their assets” it’s just became a joke now… We have those people who put ridiculous buy out clauses on their players Hulk (85million) THEY’RE the reason not the rich owners who can spend stupidly like that!
hes just jeealous that they didnt get him hazard is one of the best players in the world obviously his price tag will be high
About man utd never bid for Hazard… Fergusons a senial old man playing mind games as he KNOWS hazard will light up the premier league, Kawaga was signed for advertisment reasons.. Park left.. Coincidence? NO. He’s a bitter big nosed C*** who will retire knowing chelsea (or city) are the top two teams in England. He’s an old dog who needs to be replaced.. And live out the rest of his 5 year life span in an old peoples home pissing his pants and being spoon fed.
He is definitely envious . He spent lot of money for players like Berbatov, Nani
You guys should learn to read with understanding. Who should be valued at 30 mil? Is Hazard correctly valued? Your judgement shouldn’t be clouded by biasness and favorism. The gaffer is right, the evaluation was heavily inflated. Is Lucas Moura correctly valued at 32 mil which Chelsea F.C reportedly offered? Was Fernando Torres rightly evaluated at 50 mil which Chelsea F.C paid? This is not jealousy but being realistic.
Fergie is a Knight,he deserves some respect especially from from football lovers.
