Chelsea Transfer News: Stevan Jovetic In For £25m

Roberto Di Matteo closing in on 22-year-old Fiorentina striker

Daily Mail, Chelsea are closing in on a big money deal for Fiorentina and Montenegro striker Stevan Jovetic, after their initial offer of £20million was turned down. Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport are reporting that an offer of £25m would be enough to strike the deal, as Jovetic has a buy-out clause for that figure written into his contract. Roberto Di Matteo is set to trigger that clause, and bring the striker to Stamford Bridge to offer direct competition for Fernando Torres after Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou left the club in the summer, and French target Olivier Giroud turned them down to join Arsenal. Di Matteo will face competition from both Juventus and Napoli who are also interested in the 22-year-old star who has taken Serie A by storm scoring 22 goals in 84 appearances since joining from Partizan back in 2008. Last year he scored 14 from 27 appearances, which seems to have been enough for Chelsea to make their move, and add him to a squad which has already been boosted by the £37m acquisitions of Marko Marin and Eden Hazard. This summer's activity suggests that Di Matteo is keen to rebuild his team with the impetus on young, fast players who can attack from deeper midfield roles and the intention to play a 4-3-3 variant with one striker flanked by wider attackers. Jovetic would easily fit the model, at just 22 years old, and is able to play either upfront or in an attacking midfield role behind the main striker. Chelsea are also said to be interested in Napoli's Edinson Cavani but have been warned that he isn't available at any price, and it would presumably take a head-turning offer above £30m to even get Napoli to the negotiating table over their prized asset. Will Jovetic make a good acquisition for Chelsea? Let us know below.
