Chelsea Transfers: Filipe Luis £20m Deal Agreed

Brazilian follows in the footsteps of Emerson Thome to Stamford Bridge...

As Arsenal continue to work on the final details of their deal to bring Newcastle United's Mathieu Debuchy to the Emirates, their London rivals have made a move to replace Roma's new player Ashley Cole by agreeing to shell out £20m or so for Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis.

Provided the Brazilian can agree personal terms - and the suggestion of any player not agreeing to what Chelsea can offer is ludicrous - the 28-year-old will join up with the squad, and follows in the footsteps of the likes of Emerson Thome, Alex, David Luiz, Oscar and Willian s Samba stars to sign for the club.

That acquisition will seemingly put an end to Cesar Azpilicueta's role as first choice left-back, and it could allow him to move back to his natural position of right-back.

Atletico continue to see their best players picked away from their La Liga winning side, with Diego Costa's protracted move to Chelsea being confirmed in the past few days, the end of Thibaut Courtois' loan deal from Chelsea and departures for the likes of David Villa and Adrian. Luis had been a star of their surprising La Liga triumph, making 44 appearances, but somehow missing out on Brazil's World Cup squad despite some exceptional, solid displays in the league.

An Atletico statement read:

"Atletico Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement to transfer the rights of Filipe Luis, pending a medical with the English club.

"The Brazilian player told our club at the end of the campaign about his willingness to join the London side.€

Some will look to the price-tag of the Brazilian with some degree of puzzlement, given that he is the same age as Debuchy, has no Premier League experience, and yet seems to be costing twice as much as him, but Chelsea will know exactly what sort of player they are investing in, and he will strengthen Mourinho's first team.
