Darts: Has Phil Taylor Lost His Power?

phil taylor Everyone with an interest in sport, whether a keen darts fan or not, will know that the name Phil Taylor is synonymous with domination. Since taking up darts professionally in 1988 he has won everything there is to win, including a record breaking sixteen world championship titles. He rapidly became the face of professional darts and a man that everyone in the sport aspired to be as good as, and to one day defeat. For many this was never an option as his sheer class has shone through throughout his career to propel him to number one in the world. Phil Taylor was seemingly untouchable and despite the odd poor performance, he was still considered the favourite for every tournament he entered. However, 2013 has marked a change in the world of darts, and for many of the top players, the name Phil Taylor is no longer one to be feared. Despite winning the world championships for an amazing sixteenth time over the New Year, Phil Taylor showed something that he has never shown before€weakness. Taylor€™s mentality can often be compared to that of a boxer, in the way he bullies and clinically finishes his opponents. However, during his semi-final match against Raymond van Barneveld, he was clearly rattled. For this first time in the public eye, the pressure of not playing well had got to The Power. This was evident at the end of the match when he disgraced himself in an on-stage fracas with Barney. Was this the start of a rapid decline? He went on to win the world title that year, but looked far from convincing. In a post-match interview he hinted at retirement, and although no one will have believed him, his performances in the Darts Premier League this year have made even the most loyal fans wonder. After week 10 he currently sits in fifth position and is not looking like one of the favourites to make the top four and cement a play-off spot. This is completely unheard of as every year the competition has run, The Power has either claimed the title or at least made the semi-final play-offs. This decline is largely down to the rise of up and coming starts such as Michael van Gerwen, who Taylor narrowly beat in the final of the world championships. Van Gerwen€™s unflappable calm, mixed with unrivalled passion and commitment has meant that Taylor has been feeling the pressure more than usual. This immense pressure to live up to the legacy that he has built for himself has meant that Taylor hasn€™t been performing anywhere close to the best of his ability in recent weeks. Many people are already writing him off from winning any future titles, and foreseeing his retirement around the corner. However, as every sports fan knows, any legend that built the game, and has dominated for as long as Phil Taylor has, can never be written off. I for one would not be surprised if he won nothing all year then turned up at the world championships and notched up his seventeenth title.
