Harry Redknapp Admits Luka Modric Could Leave Tottenham For Chelsea

Why the Spurs manager's latest quotes probably mean Modric's long-projected move to Chelsea will likely happen soon, with Redknapp already eyeing the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor with some of the cash injection.

Harry Redknapp says about transfer policies at Tottenham Hotspur is beyond me but the press eat it up every year. What people need to understand is that he tells the press a pack of lies every single transfer window, each time he talks to newspapers and the television media, he does it to further an agenda and in the case of Modric, to put the challenge down to Chelsea to make an incredible offer for the player. Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy is exactly the same. It was never the case that Modric was never for sale. He was just never for sale until Tottenham got the biggest price they could. Think back to the last day of last summer's transfer window. Footage on Sky Sports News had Harry Redknapp leaving the Tottenham training ground in the early afternoon and telling the media that the club would not be making any last minute purchases - only for the club to make the biggest signing of the day, the huge business of securing the signature of Rafael Van Der Vaart from Real Madrid. Redknapp & Levy are all about misdirection and everyone needs to understand this. When Levy & Redknapp have said all summer that their star asset Luka Modric would not be sold, they do it for an agenda. Modric is not priceless to Tottenham, just as Fabregas wasn't to Arsenal and Andy Carroll to Newcastle United. Every footballer has a price and especially when a player's head has been turned by regular Champions League football, regular & serious title challengers and importantly, triple a player's wages, like anyone would, there's no chance of keeping them. As soon as Chelsea began sniffing for Modric, it was then all about the chairman and the manager coming up with the best price possible. Usually this would mean holding off on all bids until Chelsea come up with their final huge offer on the final day of the transfer deadline and selling him (something Chelsea probably began to realise when their London rivals turned down a $27 million offer a while ago... and then stopped making any more offers) - with Levy & Redknapp easing the anger of the fans by saying it became impossible to keep a player who wanted to leave (think Berbatov to Manchester United a few years back) and all would be forgiven. But Harry's latest quotes to the media are interesting;

"I want him to stay but if he's going I want the opportunity to get other players in." "There's no chance the chairman (Daniel Levy) will sell him on the last day of the transfer window. He did that with Berbatov a few years ago and ended up with no strikers. He won't do that again. "It's a difficult situation for Modric. We all love our club and everything, but what would you do if someone offered to treble your wages? "He's had his head turned by the chance to play in a team that could win the Champions League this season and I think people can probably understand that."
Is the Spurs manager finally telling the truth about the situation with Luka Modric? And why now? Because he knows he needs to strengthen his squad and the club haven't got any money to risk without the Champions League injection they missed out on by finishing fifth last season... so he is now telling us the club will accept the Chelsea bid before the end of the month. I imagine Modric might leave as early as next week. And expect Harry to be very busy in the transfer market, probably bringing in at least three notable players. One of which seems certain to be ex-Arsenal striker and Togo International Emmanuel Adebayor who is out of favour at Man City;
"I'm sure they will take to him because he fell out with Arsenal," Redknapp said. "Arsenal fans hate him so Tottenham fans will love him. He upset them so he'll be a hero here."
Lassana Diarra and Scott Parker (recently subject of a QPR bid that has been accepted by West Ham) have also been spoken about as potential new incomings to Spurs with their new cash injection. At least for Spurs fans, they will know the money they get from Modric will go straight back into the team as they fight to finish in the top four this season.
