Liverpool Transfer News: Reds To Swoop For Douglas?

Douglas Liverpool are hoping to sign FC Twente's Douglas on a free transfer this summer as a replacement for Jamie Carragher, according to the Daily Mail. The 25-year old, full name Douglas Franco Teixeira, has been a long-term transfer target for Newcastle United, who failed with a £4 million bid last summer. Italian giants Inter Milan have also shown an interest, and Brendan Rodgers has decided to enter the fray having realised the Brazilian is out of contract. The Northern Irishman reportedly has no more than £25 million to spend on new players this summer, and he is understood to want four new recruits. The signing of Douglas on a free transfer then would seem to suit the Reds, who are unlikely to free up funds for new recruits through any sale of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan looks set to stay at Anfield meaning Rodgers will have to be a bit more frugal if he wants to sign new players. His priority in the summer window is defence and with Jamie Carragher set to retire at the end of the season and Martin Skrtel unsettled on Merseyside, the Reds need a new centrehalf. The ex-Swansea boss is a fan of his former club's Ashley Williams and Tottenham's Steven Caulker but has been priced out of a move for the duo, whose valuations are too high.
