Luis Suarez’ hat-trick against beleaguered Wigan Athletic yesterday helped to stretch the Uruguayan’s impressive goal tally to 21 in the Premier League this season, two more than previous leading goal-scorer and Manchester United rival Robin van Persie, who has 19 strikes to his name.
Suarez was yesterday heralded by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers as “the best striker in England” following his demolition of Roberto Martinez’ side, and with Tottenham’s Gareth Bale also in red-hot form of late, the comments by the Anfield supremo may draw the ire of a few sections of rival football fans.
But with the Welshman stuck on 15 goals at White Hart Lane, Robin van Persie and Luis Suarez find themselves locked in a shootout to see who claims this season’s Golden Boot award and is ultimately heralded as the best striker in England in the process.
With the league now drawing to a close, we are guaranteed a close fight but here, we outline 5 reasons why we believe Robin van Persie is a better player than Luis Suarez.

3 of the reasons you have stated are actually reasons why Suarez is better, i.e. Van Persie has better players around him. One of the reasons you state (the one about exerting himself more) is so laughably inaccurate it totally devalues anything else you have said.
What you meant to write was.
1) Van Persie plays for Mam U
2) I support Man U
3) Unless Man U win everything it’s a fix and I don’t want to play anymore.
Suarez is a far more complete player than Van Persie. If the 2 were offered to Barcelona tomorrow Barca would take Suarez, as would Madrid and every other top side.
Well said Andy!.. The guy himself is a cheat.
Suarez debut season was only half a season. You wouldn’t expect him to get 18 goals in half a season.
hahaha !
Bit bias to say the least !
If Saurex is a big fish in a small pond surly that makes his achievements even more impressive. Its a damn sight harder to score in a small pond than a big one.
Suarex 4 goas season before last were from Jan to May cause he didnt sign till the Jan window. Get your facts right you fool.
RVP is a great player. But all over the pitch Suarez is better. RVP relies on ohers to create chances. Suarez can win a game on his own as he’s proving week after week. Behind Messi and Ronaldo, I;d say Suarez is number three in the world, let alone only being better than RVP.

What drivel .so let me get this right last year Suarez was better than RVP because Suarez helped Liverpool to silverware .
The proof is in the pudding Suarez has scored more than RVP had more shots on target has had more assists and dribbled more than any other player in the epl. Your right these are not the thing that make a truly great stiker you just need to help Man U win some silverware.
You really need to stop posting becaus you don’t have a bloody clue
You couldn’t even bring yourself to show Suarez in a Liverpool shirt could you !
Why don’t you just write “I support Man Utd, so therefore RVP is the best for the following five reasons.
1. RVP plays for Man U
2. Suarez plays for Liverpool
3. I cant say anything nice about Suarez cause I support Man U
4. I’m so good arnt I fellow Man U fans writing this excellent article which describes no factual content at all, cause I dont actually know anything about any other club other than Man U
5. I’m seven now so I know everything about football. Liverpool for instance have never won the Premier League. Therefore they have never been champions.
Joseph you might as work for Liverpool-Kop and Alex with that propaganda drivel/diatribe!!!
Scoring in the premiership as the only option rather than have a multitude to choose from, be at the top of your game and not be rested for big games and still score more goals than everyone else who are playing in the same league means you are better END OF STORY!
No reasons needed!!!!!
this article is a joke, Suarez has more goals in his career than RVP despite playing less games, big fish in small pond ? look at the quality around the two players who has better supply ? the season u referred too Suarez debut season, he was bought in Jan how does that count for the whole season which you’ve awarded RVPs goals for, why not include Suarez goals for Ajax then ? Suarez has also more team honours and interational goals than RVP which you also forgot to mention
Idiot.
(1) You are saying Van P was better than Suarez last season and the season before…we are talking about the best player of the 2012-13 season…what do previous seasons have to do with anything? (2) Bif fish in a small pond? Apart from your obvious bias and disrespect for LFC, that actually would count FOR Suarez. He’s had to do everything with lesser players around him. (3) As for diving/falling down easily, Suarez has completely cut out that part of his game. And please don’t mention the goal at Mansfield…Van P has also benefited from dubious decisions in the past. (4) Should Van P help his team to another treble then grant it he can claim the prize. (5) The fact that United are winning the title is because Ferguson has built a continuing dynasty. Buying world-class players like Van P helps Ferguson keep ahead of the pack. Bu Van P isn’t the sole reason Utd are going to win the title this year.
You are obviously biased for Van P and against Suarez. If you try to look at it objectively you will see that what Suarez offers on the football pitch is second to none. He is the best player in the Premiership and probably the 3rd best player in Europe.
Savs……….I meant Suarez not RVP do you know who Alex is? Or liverpool- Kop (a manure propaganda site) and yes I am biased I was born and raised in Liverpool and have supported them all my life, I have lived in Canada since ’82, please read what I wrote again and don’t show your ignorance!
This is thin stuff indeed, basically it can be summarised as “RvP plays for Man Utd and is therefore better”
Suarez has averaged a goal every 1.65 games throughout his professional career, while RvP averages a goal every 2.1 games.
Suarez creates the majority of his goals, RvP finishes off moves by others for most of his. Quite different strikers really.
As others have noted Liverpool have needed Suarez more than Utd need RvP so there is more weight on his shoulders.
Also as its March 3rd the season is not nearly over, Utd will win it but Liverpool could yet finish a place or two above current 7th. RvP has hit a dry patch with just 3 goals in the last 6 weeks. It would look pretty silly to still be waving the flag for him if he didn’t add another goal this season.
Ive never read so much pro united bias from such an obvious Man U supporter!
This is the kind of crap you get when you give one of these plums a column with which to write his own uneducated drivel!!
You are a fool…this is a load of garbage.
If both players were offered to Barca, who do you think they would take?
The answer is Suarez, without a doubt.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1544661-why-liverpools-luis-suarez-is-a-better-forward-than-robin-van-persie?
real facts showing whos the better player!
Suarez was player of the tournament in the last Copa America and top scorer……………..Messi wasn’t even close!!!………………Suarez is a king.
Suarez stats:
1) Career club games played: 321………………goals scored: 188
2) Liverpool games played: 90…………………goals scored: 49
3) Club assists: 67
4) Uruguay games played: 61…………………..goals scored: 30
Not bad for a player that can’t score goals eh????……………LOL.
RVP has more Premier League goals… And RVP has scored one more International goal and played ten more games…
In nearly 10 years, so he should have but he is nowhere near the level of Suarez. When did RVP turn up at a big international tournament????
I see I incited the sort of reaction I was hoping for. Perhaps non-Liverpool fans would like to weigh in now?
My stats destroyed you’re guff.
Your stats were meaningless. The Eredivisie is an inferior competition to the Premier League.
Another strange argument seeing that RVP is Dutch and started his career in Holland!
Yes, where he played for all of three seasons.
yep i’m a united fan and overall, i think suarez is the better player. If your post had been titled “5 reasons why van persie is a better striker than suarez” i couldn’t agree with you more. what both players offer their respective clubs is priceless but they’re completely different in what they do. suarez isn’t an out and out striker, he’s more of a secondary striker who plays in behind the lines, creating havoc. van persie is an elegant predator with lethal feet on either side and can really hold the ball up and bring others in to play. in terms of goal getting, van persie is the better striker and ultimately, scoring is a strikers job. i’m sorry lfc fans, i admire suarez for the player he is, but until we see him finish chances off clinically (as he has been doing of late tbf to him) and consistently, we can never class him as a better striker than van persie.
on the other hand, suarez’s all round game is truly one to behold. he’s one of the best dribblers in the epl, he creates so many chances for his teamates, he’s so incisive in and around the box and he has fantastic vision. some of his passes astound me…it’s for these reasons i believe suarez is the better player, but goals wins you games and van persie is a class ahead in that department. suarez could get there though!
You haven’t given much for other fans of other teams to use as an argument back! Using the the fact Suarez has a habit of up setting the opposition, Suarez plays for Liverpool, other players have scored for Man U and RVP will play more games then Suarez isn’t really much of an argument to back up RVP is a better footballer than Suarez! Suarez also led Uruguay to the Copa America 2011 player of the tournament where as RVP and Holland failed big time at Euro 2012!
Incited the reaction you were looking for? What an idiotic statement to make, you try to make some sort of reasonable argument, then come out with that rubbish. I pity you.
It looks like only Liverpool fans would feel the need to deny what you’ve been saying. For obvious reasons. But RVP is a better player, it is as simple as that. I don’t even need the stats to prove it. Nor the 5 reasons you mentioned, which were all good points.
One of the few things Rvp had over Suarez was finishing and Suarez this season is as good as the best of them at putting the ball in the net. Suarez’s 21 goals is even more impressive because Suarez doesn’t take penalties and Rvp does, but you didn’t bother mentioning that. Rvp would be on 18 goals without penalties and he missed one. Rvp’s first years at Arsenal weren’t too special and certainly wasn’t doing as well as Suarez in his first 2 years at Liverpool if you want to bring the past into it.
Robin van persie’s Arsenal record first 2 years
2004–05 Goals 5
2005–06 Goals 5
Luis Suarez Liverpool record first 2 years
2011–12 Goals 11
2012–13 Goals 21
Skill- Suarez
Headers- Rvp
Speed- Suarez
Dribbling- Suarez
Finishing- Both
Work rate- Suarez
Injury record- Suarez
Strength- Rvp
Free kicks- both ( Suarez has scored more this season)
Creating own chances- Suarez
Passing ability- Both (Suarez & Rvp have done some beautiful passes this season)
Both are great players but Suarez has more strings to his bow.
100% correct.
But who is going to win the golden boot? Looks like it’s going to be Suarez (21 goals) which will make him a better goal scorer which will make him the better striker! Which is a the only football reason that matters when it comes to forwards!
There’s only a two goal difference between the two and Robin van Persie has only played around half of each of the last two games due to injury. Suarez’ hat-trick against mediocre Wigan is the difference between the two at present.
Another reason why Suarez is a better footballer he stays fit!
Suarez’ hat-trick against mediocre Wigan BUT RVP only scored 2 against a mediocre Wigan! So again Suarez is a better footballer than RVP against mediocre Wigan!:)
The more you speak Joseph the bigger the idiot you sound. Suarez a Rvp have the exact same teams to play over the year. Suarez scored 4 against Norwich over the two games, so why couldn’t Rvp score any against a mediocre Norwich side? Not like it wasn’t important since they beat you at their home and yesterday Rvp was a little less than useless against a mediocre side.
I’m sorry Patrick, I couldn’t comprehend half of your comment. He wasn’t useless against Norwich, he had to come off through injury and shouldn’t even have played.
1Bias analysis… At the moment, Suarez is the better footballer. Robin is a finisher and his job is only to score goals while Suarez is an overall attacker. He defends, passes, attacks, support and scores. For me, without a doubt Suarez is the better striker at the moment. From a Gunner who loves Robin despite he left us…
So you can discount all of RVP’s goals in Holland can’t you????……………..ha ha ha, meaningless you say!!!
RVP only managed 15 goals in 61 games in that inferior Dutch League! Another reason why Suarez is a better footballer is that he came from the streets Uruguay and earned a transfer to Europe! Done it the hard way and has earnt everything he has done by improving at every club he has been at and not at the age of 28 like RVP but from his childhood!
Dreadful article from someone with a massive chip on their shoulder.
You could have said RVP is a better finisher but instead you focus on small minded sad matters.
Grow up tool.
The fact that Suarez is in a weaker team means that there is weaker support play, possibly being a reason for the contrary of the article. And also, the fact that Van Persie will be known for helping to win silverware is not a genuine reason. The goals Torres scored for Chelsea in last year’s European Cup campaign was more important than Suarez’s this season in the league, yet that doesn’t make him a superior striker (not by a long shot).
Finally, the argument of which is the better striker has to be finalized over who scores most in all competitions or in the league. That in which both Suarez is winning at the moment. We’ll be able to know for definite at the end of the season.
Van Persie, even more so than Suarez at the moment, proved last year that in a weaker team, a team with weaker support play, he can also do miracles. So it is not like he can only do well in good teams. Only now, once Suarez is in front in terms of goals, Liverpool fans think that the number of goals should be decisive. Didn’t hear them about that when RVP was ahead. And finally, Suarez is a cheater. People don’t like to associate very good players with cheating. RVP doesn’t need cheating to be at the level he is. Suarez can’t do without, so it seems.
Your right, Van Persie does not have to cheat, Ferguson takes care of this for him!! By influecing the FA, referees etc…
U’re a fool
The worst mistake on my part was waisting my precious time going through this trash, but on the other hand it gives an insight to the reasoning of the haters. In Nigeria, what you are trying to do is referred to as “PHD” Pull Him Down syndrome. Know what? YOU, I mean everyone of you who are bent on driving Suarez away from the EPL, have, are and will continue to fail b’cos you on a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.
im sorry but this is the most bias article i have ever read. anyone who read this would think you are just a united fan having a go at suarez just because he surpassed rvp in the talley. typical united. suarez is hands down the best dribbler in the premierleague and you cannot dispute that just because you are on your knees for rvp. ask any defender who they would rather defend rvp or suarez. also suarez has provided more than double the opertunities that rvp has created for his team mates. if the other players were alittle more clinical you would find that he would have another 6 or 7 assists to his name. im sorry rvp is an amazing player but suarez it just as good and if not better, dont forget rvp has been in prem since he was 20 odd so im pretty sure that gives him another 6 years exp on suarez and he is already outscoring him. h=next season you wait and see. itl be a landside.
Stick to gadgets and gizmos pal. Clueless and biased reporting. Even Manure fans will stay out of this discussion to defend your piece of ….
read the comments, and agree with most of them its this season not last, who stands out more football wiase, now think about it. sorry mate your artical is tosh.
What a pathetic argument. The writer is obviously a ManUre fan. The consistency argument is rubbish. Before Van Persie became good 2 seasons ago his average goal count at Arsenal very average. I rate RVP as a goalscorer. He’s top notch but he cannot run teams ragged like Suarez does. Suarez is a more complete player. Not as deadly but he makes his own goals. RVP relies on the players around him. Would I swap RVP for Suarez? Nope. I wouldn’t swap Suarez for any player in this league. There are only 2 players at Liverpool I wouldn’t swap for anyone and that is Suarez and Johnson.
Am sure by now you have learnt your lessons and will never again come up with another piece of nonsense like this, Luis Suarez is far more better than Rvp and I agree that he is 3rd best striker in Europe
For those of you who have opted to reply sensibly rather than post pure hatred, cheers. We will see who the better player is come May. If Suarez wins the Golden Boot award I shall happily take my hat off to him and concede defeat, but it is still my opinion that RVP is the best in England, that’s talking from a footballing perspective rather than a United-tinted one.
This is a ridiculous article. You have taken one of the biggest factors out of consideration. RVP has played in the PL for how many years? Suarez is younger, works harder and is the more complete player out of the two. Dont get me wrong, RVP is a class act but if Suarez was at Man Utd they wouldve still won the league. In my opinion Spurs lack a striker, and I would definitely go for Suarez over RVP. Suarez + Bale > RVP + Rooney
Suarez is the better player.
Yes he has been the only striker for Liverpool before Sturridge came in, but that only made it even more difficult for him to score. Think about it, before an games opposing managers would most probably tell his players “stop Suarez and you will stop Liverpool”…….As a consequence opposing players would concentrate fully on trying to stop Suarez as there were nobody else to stop. This would have it made it harder for Suzrez to score. As for Man Utd and Van Persie they have better players who can provide better service to Van Persie and with better players also means he will get more space as opposing defenders will not only have to concentrate on marking him but also the likes of Rooney, Hernandez, Giggs etc..
Suarez is the better player as he has scored more goals, more assists, playing for an inferior team where ther service he gets is of a lesser quality than Van Persie gets at UTD.
SUAREZ FOR THE PLAYER OF YEAR!!!!
What did RVP do tonight? Fergie should have played Rooney with Welbeck! RVP does nothing off the ball!!! Another reason why Suarez is better then RVP!!! Rafa to knock RVP out of the cup looks like RVP won’t be playing more games then Suarez after all!!!!!
Hahah, this article is utter rubbish. And I love how EVERYONE here has pointed this out.
RVP can score goals yes, but also a mercenary.
Suarez proves his dedication to his team with solid performances and huge support.
You are indeed a fool Mr Dempsey.
Comparing suarez to van persie is absolute rubbish. Reason being is that suarez has scored more goals than van persie on 2 seasons than can persie has in all his time in the premier league and suarez is in his prime and can only get better where as van persie couldnt hit a cows arse with a banjo 4 years ago at suarez age fact
Was meant to be put in context that suarez on games to goals ratio is far superior before any angry manc supporters start pointing the obvious out that he scored 30 last season and suarez has 37 in 2 seasons van persie couldnt score for toffee till 2 seasons ago abd that was his sixth season in the league two good seasons and he is the messiah one with assenal remember one injury and he is has finnished
Where was RVP again today??????
Another goal for Suarez!!!!
Suarez!!!!! Robin van Persie is okay. Bale probably better than him. But Guess what? … Suarez!!!!!
Robin Van Persie – 24 goals
Luis Suarez – 23
Suarez will not play again this season after disgracing himself once more.
To all the hateful posters who commented here…
I told you so.
