Man Utd Defender Rio Ferdinand Signs New One-Year Contract Extension

rumours suggesting he was leaving Old Trafford in the summer. The 34-year-old retired from International football last week to prolong his career with the Premier League champions. Rio€™s newly renewed deal will keep him at Old Trafford until summer 2014, but the centre-back will also feature as an interviewer and football expert for BT Sport's Premier League coverage, which will begin in August. Ferdinand has said:

"I am delighted. It has been an incredible journey and I am glad it will continue."
He added:
"Who wouldn't want to play in this fantastic team in front of 76,000 fans each week? I can now fully concentrate on my club career, which has worked well for me over the past few years.€
Ferdinand has won six Premier League titles, two League cups, one Champions League in his eleven years since joining from rivals Leeds United for £30 million. Ferdinand is now seen as a veteran at Old Trafford, someone who the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans can learn from. Ferdinand signed a three-year deal with BT Sport earlier this year along side Gareth Bale and Robin van Persie who also agreed to be guest pundits for channel in the next few seasons. Rio€™s decision to join BT Sport caused many to question whether United€™s number five would still be playing next season or whether he would follow the likes of Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher and retire. In the end the decision has been made to continue on, for one more year at least. Source: BBC Sport
