Newcastle AGREE Deal For PSV Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum

The Magpies are finally close to breaking their summer transfer duck.

PSV Eindhoven have announced that they have reached an agreement with Newcastle United over Georginio Wijnaldum - and that the midfielder has travelled across to Tyneside for a medical, which will take place on Friday afternoon. The Eredivisie champions confirmed on their Twitter - and their technical manager also firmed up reports - that exact terms are extremely close to being agreed with the Magpies and that Wijnaldum is now free to open discussions with Newcastle, with the fee believed to be around £14.5 million. Steve McClaren is finally closing in on his first transfer deal as Magpies boss - and the Toon head coach admitted recently he wanted concluded at least one player recruited by the time of the Gateshead friendly on Friday evening, and most particularly before Newcastle head to the USA this weekend. https://twitter.com/PSV/status/619408925511811072 https://twitter.com/PSV/status/619408947544506369 Wijnaldum has left the PSV hotel in France, where the Dutch champions are based ahead of their training camp in Geneva in Switzerland, to head across to the North East. In a couple of tweets on their Twitter account, PSV said:
"Georginio Wijnaldum has the players leaving hotel in France. PSV nears an agreement with Newcastle United and has Wijnaldum. "Given his personal permission to conclude negotiations and to undergo an inspection."
What's more, Brands told PSV's official website:
"Georginio Wijnaldum has left the players' hotel in Evian-les-Bains. "The 24-year-old captain is on his way to England to reach a personal agreement there with Newcastle United."
The deal needs to be ratified by the PSV board on Friday morning, but the fee is essentially agreed. Sunderland, Manchester United, Everton, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain had all previously been credited with an interest in Wijnaldum, but it now appears Newcastle have won the race - as long as the player agree to the deal. The midfielder has already been capped 18 times by Holland, scoring twice, and is regarded as one of the most-promising players in Europe due to the fact he has a habit of regularly finding the back of the net. Furthermore, the 24-year-old has already won three trophies with PSV and has made 152 appearances, scoring an impressive 56 times from midfield and contributing 23 assists, since moving there from Feyenoord in 2011. The midfielder also netted for Holland during the 3-0 third-place play-off win over Brazil at last year€™s World Cup.
