Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is plotting a shock £9 million bid for Ajax captain Siem De Jong, according to the Daily Mail
Pardew is hoping the move will signal Newcastle’s ambition and the capture of De Jong, who can play either in midfield or in attack, would surely excite supporters.
He has scored 7 times in 18 appearances in the Eredivisie this season, and featured in his club’s Champions League campaign in the so called “Group of Death” against the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.
He netted three times in the group stages, including one against City, and Roberto Mancini’s men ultimately crashed out of the competition.
Newcastle’s victory over fellow strugglers Aston Villa last night saw the Magpies inch toward safety, and Pardew hopes De Jong could complete the reversal of their fortunes in the Premier League.
However, he has two years remaining on his Ajax contract, and sources in Holland claim the player is eager to run down the deal and then move on a free.
Pardew and his team of scouts now face the challenge of persuading him to change his mind and convince him that now is the time for his move to the Premier League.
