Updated: Luuk de Jong’s agent has confirmed Newcastle’s offers and said his client would welcome a move to St. James’ Park;
“I can only confirm that there has been interest from Newcastle in Luuk,” Laros told the Journal. “I know that Newcastle are following him, that is no secret, but a club must first agree a fee with FC Twente and so far this has not happened. I really don’t know what will happen next.
“It is not up to us at this moment, it is up to those clubs to show an interest and agree a financial deal with Twente.
“It has got to be the right club for Luuk, and a club that Luuk likes. He has already rejected several clubs who are interested because they are not the right move. I can confirm that Newcastle are not one of the clubs that he has rejected.
Newcastle United have made a second improved offer for FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong, according to reports in the Dutch press.
AD Sportwereld claims that United have increased their initial £8 million bid to £10 million ( €12M). This is The Magpies’ second big bid for the player in just a few days with the first offer being turned down almost immediately by Twente on Monday night.
Reports this week suggest that Twente want £14.5 million for their 21-year-old forward sensation who has scored 32 goals in 50 games and is being dubbed as “the next Robin Van Persie” in his homeland. United are unlikely to stretch that far but they do have faith in de Jong becoming a top striker in Europe and a top Newcastle striker for the next ten years and are willing to spend more for him than they would on other targets. Though this is believed to be their final offer to the club for de Jong.
The striker is another product of Newcastle’s chief scout Graham Carr astute eye and is the prolific goalscorer who can challenge Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba for a first team birth and just as importantly, play when those two Senegalese strikers are away on international duty at the African Cup of Nations in January.
