Poland Vs England: Match Abandoned & Rearranged
England's World Cup Qualifier against Poland has been abandoned - rescheduled for 4pm (GMT) tomorrow.
Englands World Cup Qualifying clash against Poland has been abandoned due to heavy rain. The tie was expected to take place at 8pm (GMT) but large pools of water formed on the playing surface and players from both sides found it virtually impossible to pass the ball when warming up ahead of the Group H encounter. The tie will now take place tomorrow at 4pm (GMT) in accordance to FIFA rules which state any postponed fixture must be rescheduled within 24 hours. The match abandonment during FIFA's centerpiece competition comes as an enormous embarrassment to the Federation, and authorities were said to be "doing all they could" for play to take place later on this evening. Perhaps the most farcical of details involved in the match abandonment was the somewhat perplexing decision to leave the stadiums retractable roof open, in spite of heavy storms being forecast in Warsaw earlier today. Thousands of England fans who made the trip to Poland are now likely going to leave Warsaw tonight, and there is a realistic prospect that England will not have any support during tomorrow's rescheduled tie. Noises of derision were heard around the stadium as supporters began to realise the match they had paid to see would likely be abandoned. Prior to the games abandonment, England manager Roy Hodgson named a squad captained by Steven Gerrard that also included Ashley Cole. He is expected to stick with the same squad tomorrow.
