Spurs Transfer News: Benjamin Stambouli Signs

French defensive midfielder joins from Montpellier.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club have completed the signing of French midfielder Benjamin Stambouli from Ligue 1 side Montpellier. The transfer has been rumoured for several days now, but was only confirmed on the official Spurs Twitter account a short while ago. The 24-year-old, who is uncapped, but who will now surely be looking to secure a place in the French national side, came through the ranks at Montpellier, has spent his entire professional career at the club and was a key part of their title-winning side in the 2011-12 season when he was a team-mate of Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.

He has signed a five-year contract at White Hart Lane, becoming Mauricio Pochettino€™s sixth signing of the summer, and is rumoured to have cost Spurs just £4.7 million.

He is a holding player who played 37 of Montpellier€™s 38 league games last season and his signing will cast doubt on players like Sandro and Paulinho - who were already somewhat out in the cold at White Hart Lane - and it could trigger some outward movement, with Sandro linked to Harry Redknapp's Queens Park Rangers.

Spurs started the season well, but suffered their first loss yesterday - to Liverpool at White Hart Lane in a 3-0 defeat - and Stambouli will be tasked with helping to protect the Spurs defence to reduce the number of big defeats the team suffer at the hands of their top-of-the-table rivals - with last season being particularly terrible in that regard. What do you make of this signing? Will Benjamin Stambouli be a success at Spurs? Is he a poor man's Morgan Schneiderlin? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
