Sunderland Tracking £4 Million Swedish Midfielder

Will Advocaat land his fifth summer signing before the season starts?

Ola Toivonen is the latest name to be linked with a switch to Sunderland, though his manager claims no bid has been made for the Rennes midfielder, according to the Sunderland Echo. The 29-year-old Swedish international has long been a Black Cats target, and now with Dick Advocaat in charge, he could finally end up on Wearside with his former boss at PSV. Toivonen would more than likely operate as the most advanced central midfielder, though he can also be utilised as a striker and has bagged over 100 goals throughout his career, meaning that he could ease the load on Sunderland's front three. Rennes boss Philippe Montanier told the French press: €œWe have not received any offer," though that may change in the week leading up to Sunderland's Premier League opener against Leicester. He is well-known to both Advocaat and compatriot midfielder Seb Larsson, while he also formed a tidy partnership with Black Cats' new boy Jeremain Lens at PSV. The midfielder looks all set to leave Rennes this summer, with the string of clubs interested in his services including Bournemouth and Turkish outfit Trabzonspor, and with an asking price of around £4 million, he certainly appears to be a viable option.
