8 Things To Know About The DC Comics Rebirth

Now is the perfect time to jump in.

DC Rebirth

If the recent splurge of superhero movies has made you at all curious about the source material, then you're in luck - there’s no better time to get involved in the world of comic books.

DC is about to undergo a soft reshuffling of their status quo, and they're kicking things off with a bunch of brand new series.

It’s not a reboot, they’ve proclaimed, but it is all about bringing the past into the present and embracing the legacies of their classic characters. They’re going back to more traditional versions of the characters we know, but still infusing them with a couple of twists and changes. Specifically, it’s clear that the films of the DCEU are being used to inspire certain comics and make them more accessible to new readers.

Beyond the content itself, the landscape of how DC is delivering comics is changing. Everything on the creative side, from the writers and artists to the physical comics are getting an update, and it’s tough to stay on top of all of these changes.

There’s still a lot to be unveiled about this label-wide relaunch, but as of right now, these are all the biggest stories and developments that avid DC readers need to know about.

8. Nightwing's Back

With so much hubbub about what went on with Bruce Wayne recently, Rebirth is marking a far bigger point in the story of one of his former sidekicks. Since Rebirth is all about legacy, it’s fitting that Dick Grayson finally gets to return to his role as Nightwing. After being outed publicly, Grayson abandoned costumed heroics and began working as a spy during an acclaimed recent series. Fans welcomed the new tone, but still longed for his days as a masked crimefighter.

Noted Batman writer Tim Seeley is continuing Grayson’s story, and his change of scenery back to the familiar can only mean good things. This fan favourite is back in his classic black and blue costume, and fighting crime the way he used to.

Considering how important a character Grayson is, the fact that they’re putting him back where fans are used to seeing him is incredibly rewarding. Grayson was a great run, but there’s nothing quite like putting someone where they really belong. And if that’s the primary function of Rebirth, then a change like this shows it ought to work.
