America has been responsible for some of the biggest and best television series in recent memory. From Breaking Bad to Game Of Thrones, there has been no shortage of compelling drama produced by US networks. Moreover, with streaming services like Netflix and Hulu changing the way we view TV, viewers are now spoiled for choice when it comes to home entertainment. The likes of Stranger Things and The Handmaid’s Tale have furthered this revolution, becoming some of the most talked-about shows produced by streaming services. It’s true: America knows how to tell good stories.

However, no-one does drama quite like the Brits. From Prime Suspect to Cracker, Britain has been responsible for some of TV’s most compelling series from days gone by, but there are also plenty of recent dramas that deserve your attention — some that are every bit as good as Breaking Bad.

Here are ten British drama series that you should immediately add to your must-watch list.

10. Kiri

Happy Valley
Channel 4

Kiri centers on Miriam, a social worker, who is overseeing the adoption of a young girl. However, when the eponymous young girl disappears during a visit to her biological grandparents’ house, Miriam is thrust into the spotlight over her handling of the situation and she becomes public enemy number one. Jack Thorne’s brilliant script has us asking all the right questions, as this harrowing four-part drama get to the bottom of what really happened to Kiri.

Sarah Lancashire plays Miriam, and her name carries a Meryl Streep-like weight in Britain. The actress has given her remarkable abilities to many a conflicted protagonist over the years, and Kiri is no different. She gives a wonderful performance in this heart-breaking series, which has just arrived on Hulu in the US.
