10 Nostalgic British Children's TV Classics

2. The Clangers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l21Wu3oQNgk Originally run by the BBC from 1969 - 1972, The Clangers was a brutal and damning indictment of the then raging Vietnam War... Just Kidding! It was actually a children's programme about little pink knitted creatures who live on a planet in outer space. They are very gentle and not at all war-like. The Clangers are sustained by Blue String Pudding and Green Soup - which the Soupdragon harvests for them. Every episode features a problem to solve, an invention or discovery, or a new person to meet. Music tree notes were often central to the plot. The avuncular Oliver Postgate did narration duties, gently explaining to us the ways of the clangers and translating their sliding whistle dialogue. The clangers were exceptionally cute. I keep trying to get my mother to knit me one but she tells me to eff off and stop being childish. She could well have a point... Anyway, as long as I have my Jigglypuff plush toy, I will be grand.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
