5. Buffy The Vampire Slayer – Buffy Has A Sister (Season 5)

Season 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer saw the extremely sloppy introduction of Buffy’s sister Dawn, as the series’ history was retconned and all of the characters acted as though Dawn had basically been there the whole time.

While I can’t knock Michelle Trachtenberg’s performance in the role or the relationship developed between Dawn and Buffy, the matter of fact audacity of blatantly shoving this down the audience’s throat didn’t sit well with me or many of the show’s fans.

Eventually we came to deal with it, but for me it did taint the rest of the show in a negative way, for she was a constant reminder of the power writers have to talk down to their audience and do things “just because”. Though Whedon apparently added Dawn to the show to give Buffy an emotional connection that wasn’t rooted in romance or sex, surely there was a more subtle and less destructive way to do this?
