10 Reasons Better Call Saul Is Better Than The Walking Dead

Better Call Saul The Walking Dead
AMC

If you believe what you read on the internet, the creator of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, is said to be somewhat out of touch when it comes to women and gender roles. If this is true, it would certainly help to explain why the portrayal of women in the first season was so depressing. The women cooked and cleaned, while the men did all the 'macho stuff'.

Sure, the women complained, but they didn't really do anything about it. Things have gotten mildly better as the show has progressed. They tried to make Andrea more dominant, but to do this she still had to become one of the boys. Michonne certainly improved the situation, but overall, the zombie infested world needs masculine action to survive, femininity is for the weak.

The women in Better Call Saul are much better written, although there are far fewer of them than in The Walking Dead, so the writers do have a slightly easier task in this respect. Still, the character of Kim Wexler has been consistently good. She is an intelligent, ambitious and determined individual, someone who is well respected, albeit under-appreciated. Her primary function on the show isn't to look good and she isn't merely a side-kick or the token woman. Kim is integral to the show, she is the level-head that Jimmy desperately needs, and he is the wild-side she tries to resist.

The show needs Kim, it is built around her as much as it is Jimmy. Heck, even Tuco's abuelita had clear motivation and intent in the half an episode in which she appeared, and Mike's daughter-in-law was integral to helping the audience learn what exactly it was that directed Mike into the life he's now leading.
