10 Reasons Why Constantine Must Not Get Cancelled
It's one of the best shows on TV - don't cancel it!
For those of you who don't know: the TV show Constantine is based on the long running and brilliant graphic novel series Hellblazer. These comics first saw the light of day way back in 1988, and can credit Alan Moore - he of Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and From Hell fame - as one of its original creators. Like so many comics that gain critical and commercial success, Hellblazer was eventually brought to the big screen as Constantine in 2005. Unfortunately, like so many graphic novel to movie adaptations before it (Im looking at you, Spawn) this version just didnt capture the spirit of the source material. Having Keanu duuuuuude Reeves playing world-weary Liverpudlian John Constantine wasnt the best casting choice either. Constantine the movie wasnt well received by critics, and although some viewers found it to be better than the average supernatural action flick in its own right, fans of the comic series mostly hated it. When it was announced that a TV version of Hellblazer was in the works - again carrying the Constantine moniker - you could hear the collective groans. It was expected that this would simply be a made-for-TV series based on the movie of the same name, maybe the producers were looking to create the next Buffy the Vampire Slayer: a hugely successful TV series based on a mediocre movie. The show premiered on October 24th 2014 and to the surprise of a great many people it turned out to be fantastic! Finally, the true spirit of Hellblazer had been transferred from page to screen. It was suggested that no-one could make this incredibly visceral and adult themed comic into a TV show - at the very least it would have to be an R rated affair and thus limit its potential audience. But Developers Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer proved the naysayers wrong, their vision of Constantine managed to retain the dark themes and grisly scenes of Hellblazer, without making it only suitable for late-night viewing. Then - with viewing figures starting to increase each week and the series gaining critical acclaim - it was announced the decision to renew Constantine for a second season had been put on hold. This shocking course of events can only be attributed to the influence of the rising darkness itself, why else would a show thats becoming more popular by the day be facing an uncertain future? Constantine needs to be kept on the air. Its so rare these days to find a fantasy-based TV program that isn't constantly moving towards becoming overly family-friendly.
