10 Ways The Orville Is More Star Trek Than Discovery

8. The Orville Is Actually About Exploration

Star Trek, so says the famous intro, is about exploration and boldly going where no one has gone before. That was the main premise behind every Star Trek before Discovery. Even Deep Space 9, which took place on a space station, involved exploration of a new quadrant of the galaxy through the Bajoran wormhole.

While The Orville continues the Star Trek tradition of exploration (the ship is an Exploration class vessel), Discovery is mired in the same region of space as the story winds its way through the Klingon War. Ironic, given that the premise of the newest Trek show actually revolves around a new means of travelling through space in the blink of an eye.

To Discovery’s credit, exploration is in the hearts of at least some of Discovery’s characters. For them, winning the war means a return to that goal.
