In case you hadn’t noticed, in 2013, Breaking Bad ended amidst a media storm afforded to few TV behemoths. Now that it’s gone, with Mad Men soon to follow, TV critics everywhere are taking the opportunity to dub any remotely promising new show a potential replacement for their critical darlings. Seriously, if you haven’t read the phrase “the next Breaking Bad” yet, it can only be a matter of time; the shocking part is that some of these new series might actually live up to the hype.
TV, once film’s cheap and cheerful younger cousin, is now attracting the best actors, directors and writers in the industry, with everyone from Matthew McConaughey to the Coen brothers jumping on to the small screen bandwagon. 2014 looks set to bring us some of the most innovative and daring shows yet, as well as the resurrection of a few old favourites. Spoils of Babylon, the star-studded comedy miniseries with Will Ferrell, and the McConaughey vehicle True Detective have already kicked things off in style, but what more does the year have in store?
We’re taking a look at what’s to come in chronological order, but be warned that some of the shows later on the list are still up in the air and air dates are sketchy right now. Still, if you’ve got plans in the next few months, you might want to start pencilling in some free evenings, because there are thirteen new series coming up in 2014 which already sound like must-watch entertainment – and straight after the jump, there’s one which starts on Sunday night.
