When Craig Thomas and Carter Bays first came up with How I Met Your Mother they couldn't have imagined it would run for a whopping nine seasons. The idea of father sitting his kids down to tell the story of how he met his wife just doesn't appear to have the legs to lead to a 208 episode run, and yet, thanks to creative writing and a knock-out cast, that's exactly what happened.
The finale proved rather divisive, but that can't take away from the overall quality of the series' run. After all, as much as it was motivated by Ted's love life, what the show as really about was friendship, seeing the gang mature over a nine-year period; Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) got married and started a family; Robin (Cobie Smulders) realised there was more to life than having a job; Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) become a little less of a sleaze bag.
