20 Vintage Kids TV Shows From The Golden Age

grange hill tv The shows in this list go way back (I'm showing my age) and may only appeal to people over the age of thirty. They represent a classic golden age of children's TV - a time when programmes weren't dumbed down and they were enjoyed as much by adults as children, which is why the children who watched these programmes are going out of their way to purchase DVDs of these shows now that they are adults. I have not included The Simpsons or Rugrats or any really recent cartoons. This is Old School. There is an emphasis on British produced shows that captured the zeitgeist beautifully. So please enjoy my 20 Old School Children's TV programmes and add your favourite below...

20. The Moomins

the moomins A stop motion cartoon originally aimed at the Polish, German and Austrian market, The Moomins were converted into English in 1983 and rebroadcast in 1986. The series has been criticised for being morbid and scary. The Moomins look like white hippos - there is Moomin-papa, Moomin-mama and their kid Moomin. The film concentrates on Moomin and his friends, the adventures they get into and the lessons they learn - such as generosity, compassion and love. The characters are all very interesting. There is Little My who has a big personality and attitude to boot. Sniff the kangaroo is timid and paranoid. Like all of the great kids' TV shows, adults can enjoy The Moomins too. It is simultaneously charming and suspenseful with wonderful narration and animation.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
