It's been said many times that we're in the Golden Age of TV right now, and given the platter of incredible entertainment 2016 served up, it's easy to see why. When TV is this good, why even bother with the cinema?
That said, while some shows merely entertained us or made us laugh, others left just about everyone bemused, upset, and maybe even pretty damn nauseous.
These scenes from fictional TV shows and occasionally from real-life defied both expectations and belief, serving up experiences quite like nothing else this past year. They weren't all satisfying, fun or easy to stomach, but sometimes good drama isn't. Sometimes, it's just too much, though.
From brutal killings to game-changing reveals and a certain insane sporting victory, here are the 25 most WTF TV moments of 2016.
25. Mariah Kills Cottonmouth - Luke Cage
It seemed like slick gangster Cornell Stokes, aka Cottonmouth (played by Mahershala Ali), was going to be sticking around for a while, but in Marvel's hit Netflix superhero show, he ends up meeting a brutal end following an argument with his cousin Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodward).
She smashes him in the head with a bottle and pushes him out of his office window, at which point she then bludgeons him to death with a microphone stand in the show's grimmest scene to date.
It was an extremely effective and shocking scene which, while not at all gory, cemented just how much of a threat Dillard can be, both as a politician and most unexpectedly on a physical level.
