8 Great Movies That Should Be TV Shows

TV is the new film. Well, that's at least what I think... but this is an argument that has only really been debatable within the last 10 years or so. Film always had the upper-hand for various different reasons. The budgets play a huge role, but also, until fairly recently, Hollywood has turned their noses up at TV. You don't grow up wanting to be a TV star, you grow up wanting to be a movie star, and if you don't quite make it to the top, maybe a TV show will have you. The same can be said for people who grow up wanting to be a screenwriter. That is the attitude most people have had for years, but this is changing. Great TV shows have the ability to tell much grander stories than film. They have the ability to develop their characters into much more interesting and complex people than any great film has ever achieved, mostly due to the 100 minute time most films are limited to. There are a whole host of film projects currently being turned into TV shows. A show based on the Coen brothers Fargo is in development; a show based on Goodfellas, Scream, Psycho, Beverly Hills Cop and Source Code are also in development to name but a few. Some of these sound alright, some of them sound terrible. The worst sounding show to me is the show based on Psycho called Bates Motel, a prequel following Norman Bates relationship with his mother, new made up brother, and his adventures at high-school. This sounds truly terrible. But there are many, many, many great films that could find life again on the small screen. Films that didn't really have the chance to delve too much into their fictional worlds now have great potential to work within a different medium. Though TV isn't quite there yet, the budgets are better than ever, the writing is equally if not better than with film, and the acting is incredible. These are my top eight movies that I'd like to see as TV shows, and ways in which I would suggest these films make their transitions to the small screen...

I am a recent Screenwriting for Film and Television graduate from the UK. I am an unashamed geek who loves everything Marvel, and anything Joss Whedon has ever touched (except for maybe Alien Resurrection and Titan A.E). My current favorite TV shows are Breaking Bad, Family Guy, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, Homeland and Glee. I look forward to debating things with all of you in the future.
