8 Times Doctor Who Actors Played Characters That Destroyed Your Soul

6. David Tennant In Casanova

Let's just get this out there straightaway. The Doctor doesn't have sex, OK? Hell, there are even some purist fans out there who believe that he shouldn't even be kissing anyone, but that's now just a fundamental rule of the Classic Series that's basically gone down the drain since the show's reinvention in 2005. It all started with Paul McGann in the 1996 TV movie, of course, but his successors have just taken it to the extreme... and then some. Generally speaking, though, our beloved hero is presented as an innocent and angelic time travelling alien who is naive to any sort of sexual liaison, beyond the odd smooch, of course, which he's generally just on the receiving end of anyway (unless, that is, it's a genetic transfer... whatever that means!). As such, when a role comes along that features one of our Time Lords getting up to all kinds of post-watershed promiscuity, it's particularly difficult for our Whovian brains to deal with. Yes, David Tennant was in Casanova before he was in Doctor Who, but it was only just before, so it still counts, all right?! Before he took over the TARDIS as the Tenth Doctor, the actor appeared as the notorious prowling sex pest in a comedy drama series which just so happened to be written by Russell T Davies who would soon become Doctor Who's new showrunner. It's no wonder, then, that he cast David in the title role as the Universe's chief defender after seeing what he could do in 18th century Italy. With this in mind, it's even less peculiar that David proceeded to snog the face off Billie Piper in the opening episode of his first series and it was all pretty much downhill from there really, wasn't it? The Tenth Doctor definitely started as he meant to go on and if you want to find out more about Casanova (whilst pretending it's an adaptation of some sort of sexually exploitative Doctor Who fanfiction), you should probably go and get it out of your system.
