The Walking Dead universe is continuing to expand, with the announcement that a third series - and second spin-off - is coming to AMC in 2020.

While AMC have been confident of making more Walking Dead shows before now, this news gives us an exact idea of what to expect from the new series, which will over overseen by longtime TWD writer Matthew Negrete (who wrote the Season 6 finale and Season 7 premiere, among many others).

As per the network, the new series "will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”

This idea is something the main show has started to explore, to a degree, with Judith Grimes, and it's pretty compelling in theory. It should hopefully help differentiate it from The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead, but, then we were saying similar things about Fear before it launched.

Whether there'll be any crossover remains to be seen, with TWD's chief content officer, Scott Gimple, saying it'll show us "an unseen pocket of The Walking Dead universe steeped in a new mythology."

It's yet another example of AMC finding new ways to expand their flagship franchise. The Walking Dead itself will be back for Season 10, Fear's fifth season will premiere in June, and Gimple is working on a trilogy of movies starring Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes. The show's ratings may have dropped, but it's far from dead yet.
